Caravan Troubles
« on: December 22, 2024, 12:09:49 pm »

Hello,

Tried to browse around to see if anyone has ran into a similar situation, but at least no solution came up. Alas, tis a true old tale of Traders not showing up - with the twist that the Diplomats do come out to discuss what's up, and at least for the human caravans, their bodyguards show up, drink all the free booze in the tavern, and then leave (rude).

When checking with DFHack, it shows that the caravans would still be on the map, in "Leaving" status with 0 days remaining. If I do the command Caravan Happy, it shows they are approaching, with 0 days remaining. However no trader with pack animals ever show up. Except for a singular elven caravan in the spring (yes, yes, but I like to experiment with different animals for Fun!).

I have tried to establish new trade routes by sending The Bad Speech squad (a single, very rude elf) to approach with demands of single time tribute to different sites, but no new traders have so far hauled their goodies over.

The save file is old, carried over different build of the Steam version, and I'm running the current newest update on both DFHack and Dwarf Fortress Steam version.

Anyone else ran into a similar issue or have any suggested solutions? It's not a game ending issue for me, the fortress can live on without trading, but trade is one good way to dump off so much of the item load.

Thank you for any assistance.

[EDIT] Well, now the bad influence of the human bodyguards have spread to the dwarves, as a dwarven merchant tagged bodyguard popped into the tavern, drank for awhile, and then left. No sign of the people he was supposed to escort.

I've also rebuilt the Trade Debot in hopes it'd fix the problem, but no such luck. The Debot is accessible, I've built roads from all directions to the fort to have a clear path for any traders to take, since my fort is in a heavy forested area and the trees tend to grow in rather quick.

If they're stuck off the map edge with none entering the map try fix/stuck-merchants and then wait for the next caravan. Also, sometimes uneven terrain at map edges can cause units to get stuck at the map edge, stuff like 1 tile dips, especially in the corners. In one of my past embarks I had sieges that were constantly stuck at one such point until I DFhacked the terrain to be more even.

That's the thing, there are no merchants stuck to the side of the map. They aren't listed on the "Others" tab with visitors and wild animals, nor are they there visually as a sprite. fix/stuckmerchants does run and say it completed succesfully, but it doesn't give any output of dismissing or assisting any stuck merchants in departing.

My terrain is pretty even. I've built roads at the edge of the map to make it even more even, as well as ramps to help get up if needed. Thanks for the tip though! I'll keep that in mind for future forts.

When the body guards appear on the map, no alert of "Traders have arrived" plays out or no red flashing icon appears. I just notice in the Others tab that there's a swords or pikedwarf or a human tagged as Merchant, can go and look at them either drinking or moving about, and then they leave. However, the merchants, wagons, and/or animals never enter the map.

Did the merchant's animals or wagons stop appearing after your last update?

But it won't happen to me, my bit doesn't count etc etc... Just saying, after my recent experiences I couldn't trust the public if I wanted to. People got their risk assessment neurons rotten and replaced with game theory. Folks walk around like fat turkeys taunting the world to slaughter them.

Have to admit I do not remember for certain if it happened before the update, since I had a bit of a break and seeing the newer update brought me back to the game. It doesn't seem to affect all merchant's though, only humans and dwarves. The tree huggers still come with yaks. For the two other races neither merchants or their animals appear. Only the body guards and diplomats.

Sorry, I should've mentioned that you should run "fix/stuck-merchant -n" first, that would've told you if there are any merchant units stuck off-screen without actually removing them. Even if there weren't any stuck units, at least we could've ruled out that scenario. It's too late for that now, I guess.

Yeah, sadly so. I didn't think of it myself, either. Now I'm working to see if it's just the loading time for them, aka if I've given them too many items, and that's what's messing it up, so we'll see after awhile of trading just a handful of high value items they can load faster. Hopefully it'll fix it, though it doesn't explain the oddity of the bodyguard situation.
