Allow Haulers to get items in water

Something I have not heard anyone talking about is the lack of dwarfs retrieving items that are in water, which i have found to be a pain point in building and maintaining my fortresses.

It would be great if the Swimmer skill would allow haulers to retrieve items that have fallen into a pool of water.

I feel like based on the skill level, depth of water, and type of water there should be some ability to retrieve items that have fallen into water.

To build off this concept even the ability to interact with things under water in general like build or mine would be great. A high level swimmer who is a miner should be able to mine out an area and a pump operator should be able to reach a pump if it gets submerged.

Maybe I am missing something in my current game playing but this seems to not be a thing so wanted to make a suggestion to expand the Swimming skill

Why should a dwarf need swimming skill to pick up something that is only in ankle deep water?

I think dwarves will pick up stuff from ankle deep water?  This is why dwarves try to cross rivers near waterfalls and get themselves killed.

Well my thought was to pick something up in deeper water like 3+ level water

I think dwarves will pick up stuff from ankle deep water?  This is why dwarves try to cross rivers near waterfalls and get themselves killed.

Yeah i believe that is true. My post is mostly for deep water (ponds, lakes, water caverns)

Here’s my ideas for swimming related skills:

Swimming

Covers entry into water on same z-level and swimming at the water’s surface.

Underwater Swimming

Covers breath holding, diving to lower z-levels, retrieving lightweight items from 3/7 or deeper water, and attaching a line to heavier items in 3/7 or deeper water and then hauling the item out of the water (requires an available rope or chain).

Diving

Covers entry into water from higher z-levels.  Dwarves with higher skill are less likely to be injured when diving from higher z-levels.

Swimming (Armor)

Military skill that counteracts maluses from wearing armor while swimming.

Underwater Swimming (Armor)

Military skill that counteracts maluses from wearing armor while diving underwater.

Diving (Armor)

Military skill that counteracts maluses from wearing armor while diving from higher z-levels.


Some of these skills could probably be combined.  For the “… (Armor)” skills, see e.g. Suijutsu.


There should also be a way of building and designating a swimming pool.  Also, there should be a way to designate one (or more) swimming instructors.

All of those are great idea. I think miscellaneous skills could be expanded upon. In your examples it could lead to some survival skills for a fortress to navigate their location. I can see this working for both adventure mode and fortress mode
