Shadows over Onyx
« on: November 18, 2024, 07:55:53 am »

(A loose sequel to my previous spambird game featuring a bird-shaped fleshhorror on a spaceship.)

You were hatched from an egg, under a bright light, and spent your first two weeks getting fed tasty stuff.  You don't know what it was, but it was tasty!

Eventually you started fluttering around, singing, and turned orange.  And just when you started figuring out how to fly, someone grabbed you, knocked you out, and you woke up in a cage.

The cage sucked.  The room was nice, all shiny and full of decorations.  And humans, squids, smelly animals, giant slugs.. all kinds of things walked past.  But there were only a few sticks in there and nothing understood your chirps.

But one day.. a little one comes up to you, and creeps towards your cage.  You twitter and chirp.  And the door opens!  Out you fly, into the room, through a few doors, and into a much bigger space.  A nice space.

A space with eight trees and all the sunshine and water you could want!  Eight trees.  Eight!  Sour fruit tree.  Small fruit tree.  Flower tree.  Tall tree.  Nut tree.  Smooth tree.  Sticky tree.  And Pointy tree.

They have seeds to eat, nectar to drink, fruit to eat, and there's a fountain of water.  And lots of interesting stones and small bushes, some of which have berries and flowers of their own!  And above is this clear dome and above that is the sun!  Except when there are clouds and rain.  There is also the doorway to here, and the city outside, with so many buildings and so much space.  But in here is better, as there are eight trees, and nobody stops you when you sing!

Well, things were perfect.  Until they weren't.  One day, there was fighting.  Two people came into your space, and jumped around, flinging fire and lightning at each other.  They did flips and fired glowy things at each other.  There was much noise and the walls and the trees got hit.  There was damage and scorch marks and in the end, the two of them killed each other dead!

You were so scared it took some five minutes before you poked your head out.

While there was a great amount of noise coming from inside, it was quiet in your dome.  And there was something lying there on the ground, right in the middle of all this.  Something tiny, glowing green and yellow.

You tapped it with your beak.

You're knocked onto your back, wings spread out.  Inside your mind are strange visions, of the world, spinning through space, the stars at night, and the galaxy at a whole.  You're a tiny orange-and-black bird, and this is too big for you.

Some time later, you awaken, stand up, and fly back to your perch.  There's something in your head, but you dismiss it.  More worryingly, you are now smart.  This is the planet Onyx, and you don't feel perfectly content with your eight-tree universe anymore.  Apparently there's a whole planet, with billions of people.  A whole galaxy.

And you're hungry again.  How long were you out?  You find more seeds and fruit and eat your fill, and then sleep on this for tomorrow.

Day 1

You wake up, and the sun has come up again.  The place is still mostly a mess, but the two bodies have been removed, along with some of the mess being cleared, but the trees are still damaged.  At least the water feature still works.

We fly.  We can see the sky.  Have we never flown up?.  Netting or mesh, or a window to the outer world?

It's some kind of glass or crystal.  No place to perch.  It's smooth enough to go bonk on, while slippery enough and hard enough to not scratch.  Just a big dome over the park.

Easiest way out is to wait for someone to come in, and flit through the door.  Lots of people come in here on a normal day.  There's a tentacle-face creature that comes in to clean up and take care of the plants.  There's a couple of small ones who like to hang out in here.  There's a big red one you see fairly often.  And a few others, now and again.  And there will probably be some people here to help with the damage.

If not, well, maybe you can go through the vents.  Or you could just wait it out.  Someone will be in here and you've got plenty of food and water.

Wait for someone to open the door, then rest on their head and let them carry you to freedom.

Befriend tentacle-face.  Offer neat leaves, interesting stones, and preen them, sing to them, show off for them.

Befriend tentacle-face.  Offer neat leaves, interesting stones, and preen them, sing to them, show off for them.

You're going to make friends!  And if that doesn't work, fly out the door once someone comes in.

You find a nice branch with a few leaves on it, and perch next to the door, listening for movement.

..eventually, someone comes.  You hop back away from the door and lie down, playing dead while the door hisses open, eyes open.

The person shouts.  It's not tentacle-face, but the big red guy.  Surprisingly, you can understand him.  "They killed the oriole too?  Damn.  Master Lukas will be really angry, he paid over fifteen thousand credits for that bird.  And lady Shalla.. she will be.."

Sounds like your cue.  You get up, grab the stick, and fly onto the big guy's head, latching right in the middle of his lumpy head, grabbing his short black hair.

"Gah!"

The big guy starts running around waving his arms.  Straight out of the park.  And shouting.  The next room is an open kitchen, with a large island, countertop, and bar, with miscellaneous appliances and a slightly recessed seating area.

Straight into the bar he goes, reaching up for you.  You drop the branch and bolt, as he slams his gut into the island.  He then staggers back.  You re-grab your peace offering, and land back on his head.  He wheezes, tries to straighten up, and steps backwards falling down the one step into the seating area and you hop off, as he tumbles backwards into the glass table, cracking his head very hard.

..did..  did you kill him?  By accident?

Quickly check his breathing and see if he's still alive, if he seems hurt we should try to find someone and alert them.
