We're basically cops/feds in this situation, so let's act like it. Politely but firmly pull one of the scientists aside and get a firsthand account of what the flip actually happened, who pushed what button, what's the Wi-Fi password, and so on. Ask them if they tried turning it off and turning it on again.

+1, but I think we should also ask a few subtle questions about the portal technology in general.

You approach the scientists and join your partner's side, who is asking the same kinds of questions you were planning to ask, and who seems disappointed the distraction is being wasted.

The scientist is asking you to be digitized(so you can rescue the show host), and is asking for your consent. Your partner seems to be letting you take the lead, possibly as an evaluation of some kind.

The agents move closer together as directed by the scientists like posing for a photo. One begins counting down from ten, then mouths the last few numbers silently. Before finishing, there is an explosion outside. As the agents switch to an alert stance, they are hit with a laser, and are vaporized into tiny cubes, and disappear. The are both floating in a white void, their clothes change into something like royal guard armor made of lightweight leather.

Your kinetic boots transform into black scaled boots. Your partner flashes, but you don't see what changed.

And then, you are somewhere else.

"What was that? Did you see...oh, wait a sec. I'm going to try to get in touch with the scientists. Why don't you secure the perimeter?"

I'm not thrilled by the idea of splitting up, but we should follow orders and scout out the surrounding area.

While your partner is not your boss, they do have experience. You split up but keep them in shouting range, to explore this simulated fantasy land. A dreary reality. The trees look twisted and dead, the sky is grey. A menacing black tower lies at the center of the forest, and there are strange pink wormy vines everywhere...

You spot people near the base of the tower, some seem badly injured.

A shadowy figure stirs in a window near the top of the necromancer's tower, then fades from view.

Do we only have the boots or do we have other equipment we can use to fight?

Also this feels like a reference and if it's to what I think it is, I get it.
