I like the html comments that indicate what work is being referenced in a paragraph. I think it'd be nice to be able to see those without having to view the source of a page. Maybe could have a tooltip at the end of each section that readers can mouseover to see the reference. Or maybe use text with the same color as the background, and readers can highlight the text to read what it says. This had the advantage of letting a reader reveal them all at-once with select all and using Ctrl-F if there's a long list and looking for a specific one. Or maybe put the markers before each section like in the comments and allow them to be used as anchor links.
