"If we could be so lucky..." John Grumps, but nonetheless moves to assist Ran in his quest, pulling out two wands ready to try his luck blasting.

John Also Listens to the Door with Light and Readies himself to wand at anything threatening.

Turn 2
TURNTURNTURN
10 Minutes pass // 20 minutes spent since arrival.

Ran the Rat Catcher and John the Counter approach the western door, edging back from the light. They listen carefully, wands in hand. Meanwhile, Bobby enters the room with them, and starts to search along the walls for odd seams and the sconces to see if they can move.

After some time, neither John nor Ran hear anything, and so Ran opens the door, wand at hand!

The room in front of Rat and John is 30 ft by 30ft square, except the corners are instead diagonal. It is a diamond shaped room with flat cardinal walls. The four diagonal walls each picture an intricate mural of robed men, look dour. On the wall closest, the man in robe's face and hands are smeared in black tar.

That's not what catches your eye, however. A flaming brazier smelling faintly of oil sits off center in the middle of the room, while the very center homes a huge bloodstain, dried with age.
Meanwhile, Bobby finds nothing of interest as he finishes his search, satisfied there is nothing to find here.  Name arrives from the East, throwing open the door to the South. The room is filled with screeching! Two red eyes flicker in the light and peer out from the darkness, looming above Name. A snout of patchy pale fur, covered in oozing boils is all you can see, the hulking silhouette in the room still obscured, outside the flickering light.

Combat!
The creature is surprised - the Convicts attack first!

Usually anyone can post in any order during the team's turn. However, Ran and John already have wands equipped, so I recommend they go first.

Everyone has line of sight on the creature behind the South doorway. You can see it's snout starting to bulge, it's cheeks inflating, ooze dripping down the corner of it's raggedy mouth!

You are all currently unencumbered so can move 40ft in combat, or 4 squares. Each square is 10ft, so can fit two convicts on it. Your wands have a range of 120", or 12 squares, and can be used as long as you can see your target. You can just about aim for the creature's snout. Melee combat is also possible - you are currently unarmed so your damage, if you hit, will be either 1 or 2.

still trying to decide if we shall be 100% theatre of the mind or not, but for the sake of the first combat here's a reference.

Exits:
North Wall, Memorial Room: A thick wooden door, swollen in it's frame. A horrendous odour comes from the North.
East Wall, Memorial Room: The door you have just come through, leading to the empty room.
West Corridor, Memorial Room: You see a long flagstone corridor, dissapearing into darkness after the brazier's light fails to reach further.
South Wall, Empty Room: Blocked by a Monster!
East Wall, Empty Room: Carl's awfully quiet...

"Awwww crap crap crap crap crap crap!" John says as he tears away from the opened door and running across the room back towards Carl, pointing his wand at the monster as he runs, he hopes for good luck as he activates it.

Shoot monster with equipped wand.
If possible and it's still alive, shoot monster with second wand.
Move 30 feet back towards the starting room, hiding in the doorway.

Turn 2 - Combat Round 1, John, 1/4 Convict's Actions
Each creature and player's actions take 10 seconds.
TURNTURNTURN

John blasts the creature with the first Magic Missile wand! A single bluish-purple missile launches forth, dealing 5 Damage to the creature! Quirk triggered. A heavy tome drops from the ceiling and bops John on the head, dealing 1 Damage! The tome falls to the floor as John begins his run towards safety.

He tries to ping off another attack with the second wand. Despite duel-wielding and this being his first time using wands, he has a natural knack for it, and the second wand's tip glows as it shoots out a magic missile! The Creature takes a further 4 Damage! Quirk triggered. John's head dissapears, the rest of the party watch as the rest of his body ducks through the doorway unabated. John seems unaware.

John locks eyes with Carl as he ducks behind the door. Carl guiltily steps away from the North wall, wearing a gold tiara.

This creature looks sufficiently ratlike....Quickly, Ran takes the standard Rat-Taming position, and attempts to intimidate the creature! If this appears to be going poorly, just blast it with the wand...hes a bit less eager to do so since he saw the last guy become some sort of dullahan or other headless creature, Ran isnt sure, but so be it!

Turn 2 - Combat Round 1, Ran, 2/4 Convict's Actions
Each creature and player's actions take 10 seconds.
TURNTURNTURN
Ran is a seasoned pro. He knows a Rat when he sees one. But this one? Something is horribly horribly wrong with it. Grotesque pustules cover it's patchy fur, it's bulbous body alone is ten foot long!
Ran attempts to intimidate it (-2 to disposition due to sickness... rolling..) and fails. The creature is clearly out of it's mind in pain! It would be a mercy to put it out of it's misery... Plus... what does a rat of such unusual size even eat to get that big..? People...?

Ran blasts the monstrous rat with his wand, a missile of bluish purple energy bursting forth for 4 Damage! The onslaught is certainly causing the creature to wobble on it's feet. Quirk triggered. The room rumbles as an ornate bronze door appears directly behind Ran. It is flanked by two finely carved blood-red statues, depicting the writhing tormented forms of impish creatures being punished by Chthonic gods. Staring at the faintly glowing door fills you with a foreboding feeling...

Gain 15 XP for firing a new wand.
First Wand, Ongoing: 30 XP may be granted if you can correctly identify this wand's Quirk Effect. Gain 10 XP for successfully identifying this Wand's Quirk Target, and a further 5 XP for identifying the duration of the Quirk. Gain 300 XP for determing the Quirk's Cure -  - this is optional, the Academy do not seem concerned by Cures.

I’m just gonna give my first guess to this one

Effect of Quirk: A portal to hell appears - close! You might be able to inspect the doorway after the fight to know exactly where it goes.
Target of Quirk: the nearest room? Or maybe near the caster
Duration of Quirk: Instantaeneous

Optional - Cure for Quirk: Asking it to leave??? Something please I hope -- you'll probably need to make it to the surface to discover this one. or meet a spellcaster who's knowledgable on these things.

Gain 15 XP so far!

Turn 2 - Combat Round 1, Name, 3/4 Convict's Actions
Each creature and player's actions take 10 seconds.
TURNTURNTURN
The wand discharges, and almost surprises you as two bolts of Magic Missile shoot forth. More and more, you are learning these wands are definitely not created equal. The first bolt strikes the diseased bulbous creature for 1 Damage as the other lands for a further 4 Damage! Name feels tingly, followed by a strangely serene feeling. It's hard to tell why.

Name shoots the wand in their other hand. The party waits with baited breath for a second but despite dual wielding Name succeeds as the tip of the wand fizzles with energy. Three bolts shoot forth, dealing 4, 6 and 4 Damage consecutively!

The Pestilent Rat barely seems to still be standing, it's body pitted with burns and arcane wounds. Name goes to move, only to immediately double over and begin to vomit! You see the head of a creature emerge from Name's mouth?? Followed by a long slender neck... Name is unable to move as he discorges it.

Gain 30 XP for firing 2 new wands.

First Wand, Ongoing: - 275 XP may be granted if you can correctly identify this wand's Quirk Effect. Gain 10 XP for successfully identifying this Wand's Quirk Target, and a further 5 XP for identifying the duration of the Quirk. Turn 2 - Combat Round 1, Bobby, 4/4 Convict's Actions
Each creature and player's actions take 10 seconds.

Bobby picks a random wand and fires, a single bolt of purplish-blue energy shooting forth and dealing 1 Damage! Quirk triggered. You wince as the bolt lightly bops the plagued creature on the chin, but it's enough. You see the huge 10 ft rat's stumpy boil-covered limbs give way as it's eyes roll back in it's head. Globulous green goo leaks from the corner's of it's mouth, who knows how dangerous it could have been if you had let it act...

Meanwhile, a potion appears at John's feet.
Gain 15 XP for firing a new wand.

First Wand, Ongoing: - 40 XP may be granted if you can correctly identify this wand's Quirk Effect. Gain 40 XP for successfully identifying this Wand's Quirk Target, and a further 5 XP for identifying the duration of the Quirk. The monster is dead! Everyone receives 75 XP. Please keep your XP totals updated on your sheet as some of you may be approaching level up ;)
