Sometimes they'll take the barrel and the eggs. Sometimes they'll take the barrel with a stack of eggs inside and leave the rest behind. And I'm pretty sure I've had instances where I found empty barrels on my trading screen when there should be eggs inside it. What's going on here? Is it because the capacity was exceeded? Because it seems like one barrel in a single tile stockpile can hold hundreds of eggs from dozens of stacks, but when I mark it for trading they leave everything but a few stacks inside the barrel. Do different eggs from different species take up differing capacity?

Anyone have a solution for this? I tried making stockpiles accepting only one type of egg but they still leave behind several stacks when bringing the barrel to the depot.

I rather not resort to cooking all the surplus eggs, I'm pretty sure my dorfs are getting sick of turkey hen and beak dog egg roasts already.

The only thing that comes to mind is that if the eggs were forbidden then they would've gotten left behind when you ordered the barrel to be brought to the depot.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

Nah, they're not forbidden. I was trying to observe what happens; as soon as I mark the barrel for trading multiple stacks inside the barrel get marked as tasked. Those eggs then get left behind.

Are you sure that all of the eggs were actually in the barrel, and not just occupying the same space as the barrel?  Keep in mind that a barrel or large pot can only store 6000 eggs.

Definitely. It's very obvious when the eggs are stored or not stored in the barrel, as the display between container view and multiple stacks on a tile view is very different. Also, even with multiple stacks of large clutches of eggs I don't think I've ever had much more than 1000 eggs on my fortress at any given time. I'll try to post some screenshots next time a caravan comes.

What are they tasked for?  Dwarves will sometimes move items between containers if they think the current container is unsuitable.  I don't recall if this is the case, but, if containers hauled to the depot lose their stockpile link, what you observed could totally happen.  A possible solution (if that's indeed what happens) is to temporarily disable eggs in all your stockpiles, then the eggs will have nowhere to be moved into.

I think you may be right.

This is what the barrel looks like when I selected it in the trade depot screen:

And this is the same barrel before I unpaused it. Note that the barrel is unlinked from the stockpile it's curently sitting in:

After unpausing, the barrel acquires a link to a different egg stockpile (one that's set to receive from anywhere, not sure if there's a connection to it). Eggs in the barrel starts getting tasked:

Dorf picks up the barrel, leaves the tasked eggs behind in the original stockpile:

The eggs that got left behind in the stockpile:

More eggs get tasked while the barrel is being hauled to the depot:

Barrel arrives at the depot and yet even more eggs get tasked:

The remaining eggs in the barrel in the depot (tasked eggs get hauled to the stockpile that accepts eggs from anywhere):

I will try your suggestion of disabling eggs in all stockpiles for the next caravan. I'll also try disabling accept from anywhere on the other stockpile first. Either way, I'm pretty sure this behavior, either the stockpiling of too many eggs in a stockpiled barrel or the removal of eggs from a hauled barrel, is not intended.

Would you mind editing your post to put direct links to the images between image and spoiler tags?

Like this:

Code: [Select]
[spoiler=<insert description here>][img width=800]<insert direct image link here>[/img][/spoiler]
The button for the spoilers tags is the one that looks like a radiation symbol, and the one for the img tags is the one at the far left of the bottom row that looks like a picture in a picture frame.

I did that initially, but for some reason it doesn't work with pics on imgur:

It just shows a blank line.

To get the direct link to the image, right click the image and select Copy Image Link (might vary by browser), it will be like "https://i.imgur.com/pIHYHhB.jpeg".
or within tags, like

Ninja'd, but, that's because those are links to web pages, not images. If you click the ..., then Get share links, there's a BBCode option.

(Though, this option only seems to only appear for the image uploader.)

I use https://postimages.org.

Open up a gallery by clicking on it, click an image, and click the share button.  This should bring up a box containing a bunch of lines of stuff with buttons to the right of each line for copying to the clipboard.  Find the line that says “Direct link” (it should be the second one) and click the copy button to the right of it.  Then go to your reply or post that you’re writing, position the cursor between the img tags, and paste.

Keep in mind that, if you want to use an image for your forum avatar, you’ll need to change the “https” at the beginning to “http”.

Hope that helps!

Thanks guys, I've edited the post. I haven't used imgur in ages and I find the current UI very confusing. Managed to find the setting for the older UI and that helped a bit.

Just wanted to report, disabling eggs in all stockpiles did the trick. Barrel reaches depot with all eggs it started out with. Thank you Tomsod.

I'll also open up a report on the bug tracker about this issue.

Damnit, looks like it's happening for bins too.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I can't figure out why this is happening, but it doesn't seem to happen as regularly as with the eggs. But like the egg barrel, the bin suddenly got linked to a different stockpile after it was marked for trading. I think I know what's happening. The dwarves have a tendency to consolidate stuff into containers, so when the bin/barrel loses its link they're thinking the stuff inside doesn't belong in there anymore. So if an empty bin/barrel that accepts the items is available, they'll attempt to move the stuff into said bin/barrel. Disabling bins/barrels in the other stockpile stopped the items from being removed from their current container.
