The Concerns of the Deep
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

Expedition Journal
Year 666
Granite

Shadowed under the oppressive canopy of these ancient, brooding mountains, I find myself torn between dread and exhilaration. As I etch these observations into my journal, a shiver runs down my spine. Is that excitement for what comes ahead, or fear of what lies under our feet? Our endeavor here has summoned palpable foreboding: a spirit of whispers. A spirit which creeps up from somewhere deep below.

Today, we have proclaimed our dominion over the last corner of this rocky precipice, which the grim locals have dubbed "The Wall of Breaking". To the south, we see The Steamy Spikes and The Spine of Trammeling. These unyielding stone spires jag upwards, almost as if reaching for the stars; as if beseeching them for guidance. The earth here hums and shakes, you can feel it in the stone. The stone here, too, it feels off. Not quite conglomerate, not quite right. The lichen and moss which somehow sustains itself here grows in odd patterns, almost like those damned sigils I see in my dreams.

The stalwart laborers along with me show signs of unease, though we are all too proud to let it on. It is here, in the midst of our flickering torches, that we feel most secure, as if we know the darkness itself harbors some hatred for us. The dwarves of The Incidental Palace speak rumors of these lands, of horrific statuettes found in this false-stone, as if the mountain herself is trying to hide her foul misdeeds. Rumors of nights of fitful sleep, of Knowledge, buried and breathing, somewhere deep down.

Alas, the darkness has a way of seeping into the hearts of even the drunkest dwarf. It is still the night, and there are horrors well-known out there. Cannibals, predators, undead legions...doctors... Are the nightmares here much worse? Strange angles of impossible geometry mean little in the jaws of beasts. Perhaps the depths are not our doom.

Perhaps, they are our only salvation.

Here, in

Welcome to Spookyfort V: The Concerns of the Deep

Previous Spookyforts:
Spookyfort I: Crystallake
Spookyfort II: Boomstick/Dogsoldiers Double Feature
Spookyfort III: Livingdead
Spookyfort IV: The Overlook

This is a Lovecraft-themed horror fortress. Let's dig too deep and find that which may never die!

Gravely Serious Rules:

- Turns are as long as you want to play. The fort will end on October 31st, so the more turns we can get in, the better!
-Try to finish up within 3 days of grabbing the save.
-  If you need to bail after playing for only a couple weeks in-game, upload and post. No worries! If you had time to sink 3 years in. Good on you! Just post it already, you bum.
- Spookyfort is back in 47.05 this year. Premium is too cumbersome to mod, and ascii provides more for the imagination. Plus, we all know how to play it and it's free. I mean...it's the spookiest or whatever
- Spook the dwarves, but try not to kill them! At least, not in an uninteresting way.

~໕~

Spooky Mods:
From ZM5: The Kitchen Sink
Mods included: Zombies Ate My Dwarves (plus several of the expansions), What Lurks Below, Diablo Mod, Darksiders Addon, Crawl Addon, Assorted Creature Pack, Lands of Duality, Merged Megabeasts
As always, a cold-hearted thank you to ZM5, without you, this would not be possible.

From Seraphim: The Beldam

From Nova Solarius: Cavern Plants

From brolol.404: Deep Rock Galactic Creatures

A book mod of my own design, which was not enough book titles for 666 years of generation.

Over-scream-ers:
- delphonso - Bone-jour :: Ghoulish Pleasure
- dikbutdagrate - Humming Along
- Salmeuk - A Breath of Fresh Scare
- delphonso - Pass Me The Boo's
- Salmeuk - Pirates Out For Boo-ty
- Maloy - Book-creeping
- Travis Bickle - A Murder Ghost Foul
- Salmeuk - Even Marble Crumbles
- delphonso - To Build Something Exquisite and Unfathomable

I'd like to sign up as an overscreamer. Spookyfort's not quite done with old Quantum yet...

EDIT: As a side-note, Spookyfort IV: the Overlook seems to be missing links for its final chapters in the OP of that thread.

PTW for the time being.

Watch on...if you DARE!

Thanks! I'll fix that up!

Yeah, I think it was just too cumbersome to go to 50 last year, with not much payoff, really. I'll let the workshop cook another year. It feels great to be back in 47.05 - a decade of muscle-memory just doesn't go away.

I shall PTW and eagerly await the spooking.

Yes! The horror begins soon.

Same, honestly. I've been away from DF for quite a while. Felt great just tooling around to make sure everything works.

Anyone have a good color scheme they can recommend? Maybe from a previous spookyfort. I'm not satisfied with the one I've got now: which is just "Warm"

Overseer queue is all updated - let us know if you want a dorfing.

The last one I used was from here, the Vherid: Sorrow color scheme (it's also the one I normally use.) Last v47 spookyfort I also ran with the candy-tech VFD tileset for that retro tech look (and I'm bummed full tileset support isn't really a thing yet for v50+ because I like it)

There's also DF Color Configurator, which you can use to adjust the saturation and temperature of color schemes. Quite a handy tool.

       The Concerns of the Deep

Spring of 677:
Report by Pho Ondelso

The mission was unsuccessful, as expected by the higher-ups. We heeded the call to explore the forsaken site of Lovecrafted, itself, now a sad ruin, steeped in unsettling whisperings of a past best left forgotten. Trees at the site curled up like twisted fingers, pointing to the sky - accusing. My team made no contact with either residents or creatures of interest. Beleaguered yet determined, we scoured the remnants of what was once the home to many dwarves. Now, however, its desolation sits heavy on the shoulders - how we wished to find someone there; then we could at least explain the feeling of being watched. We did manage to recover some documents from the site. Yellowed pages in crumbling leathers - far too ancient to be abandoned so short a time. Some are still being deciphered, their text is in eldritch scribbles unlike anything we've seen before - the glyph almost dance on the page and sicken the reader. The only journal in basic dwarven runes happens to be from the year 666, the foundation of Lovecrafted. It was penned by Lor Brushquakes.

That account is detailed below

[begin excerpt]

Superstitious greybeards! My crew and I laughed as we barged south. What did ol' Rakust say? "There's things under them mountains - things best left sleeping." What an old coot - there's things all around us, Rakust! There's things to our north, east, south and west - and the south doesn't have a scrap of defense on it. So I guess that's what we are - a bunch of hot-blooded heroes.

The crew elected me leader on the trip down, and I can't say I'm surprised. I've always been the top of my class, best of show, and I'm good with people. I'll return their trust in kind - as I see it, they trust me to make good decisions, and the least I can do is live up to that. Here at Lovecrafted, you're safe if you're with me.

We'd barely felled our first tree or dug out the first boulders when a messenger came with news from one of the towns those things live in. I guess things are worse down here than we thought - if the monsters are ready to swear fealty.

Speakin' of monsters, I bet Ol' Rakust is talking about these little guys. They ain't a threat to no-one. Basically a purring maggot, which I despise, but that's no nightmare made real, now is it?

Hmm.

Well this is odd.

I asked the miners to dig out a straight passage in the mountain-side. They said they had, but to the rest of us, it feels...curvy. Maybe it's the lack of sleep - we've all been having nightmares. I chalk it up to no beds and all that gunk Ol' Rakust was slinging. First thing we're building is a dormitory. Let's figure out where the fort will be.

Eshtan came around the corner of the entry way and that maggot spooked her. At least we know they go down easy - but...well Eshtan hasn't stopped washing her hands since. She's even rubbed them raw - says she can't get the stench out. I'll talk to Morul and Unib about making some soap.

Down, down we dig - looking for a fine layer to build a home in, then I hear the shout up the stairs.

Time to prove Ol' Rakust wrong.

[end excerpt]

OOC:
Boy it feels good to be back in DF and back in 47.05. Quite calm and not much news to report - the first year is nearly over and all I've done is dug out a basic fortress. I'll probably pass the save tomorrow at this time.

Writing Lovecraft-y text is exhausting but fun. I keep tabbing over to Lovecraft excerpts to mimic style/vocabulary, etc. It feels a bit like tracing over someone else's work, but I think it came out okay.

Thanks Splint and brewer bob - with those two tools I came up with my own scheme that'll appear in tomorrow's update - because a rutile lever in the color scheme I have now is like...actually invisible.

Keep calm and spook on!
