Have objects made from DF minerals?
« on: May 09, 2008, 02:19:00 am »

My uncle is buying a Malachite crystal ball! He showed me a picture from the site he's getting it from. Quite beautiful. I'm afraid he's never played dwarf fortress, and it surprised me when he told me this out of the blue (the malachite is blue by the way as I recall).

So, this brings me to ask; do any of you have any decorative or functional objects made from DF minerals? Naturally, very common stones like sandstone and granite don't count, unless the objects are somewhat interesting.

Also, if your item is interesting, try to include a photo!

P.S. I'm coming to realize that dwarf fortress is turning us all into minerologists. I'm sure I'm not the only one who wikis every new type of stone I encounter in the game.

Hmm, let's see.

Almost all the furniture in my room is made of wood (shocking, I know). I have a couple of galena and platinum rings. There's a lot of copper wiring around. Some native aluminum cans with chicken tallow, bismuthinite fireworks, garnierite batteries, gold electronic sliding contacts inside my computer, hematite fillings in my mouth, and sphalerite coins just off the top of my head.

I'm sure there's more stuff lying around.

Hematite fillings?  Airport security must love you.

Also, why do you have zinc coins lying around?  I used to take vaguely coin-shaped zinc supplements (mmm, tangerine-flavored...), but I don't think that's what you were talking about.

Well, there's a wooden stick with a graphite core around here that's encircled with bands of some metal or another. I'm not sure which.

There are also several steel goblets and a lizard in the kitchen, and I've been listening to rock groups.

I have an aluminum hairbrush that menaces with spikes of plastic.   :)

My Father brought 5 years ago 2 very big and heavy Rocks Home he had found in the "Müglitztal" where he was working. These Rocks had contained many Amethysts so we cuted and polished them (6 or 7 pieces of 3 up to 20 Kilograms) and now one is decorating my Bookshelf.

My Father brought also some Ammonites home the largest had an Diameter 1/2 Meter. This is DF related because i have some Moded common Fossils in Limestone and
Chalk.

Pennies are almost entirely zinc, with a thin copper plating.

You can allow or stop your dwarves from eating these mushrooms, but it's entirely optional and doesn't turn Dwarf Fortress into Dwarf hookah-smoking pad.

As a kid I had some stone salt rocks ... bought from the old salt mine at Altaussee, or maybe Hallstadt (the oldest known salt mine - they dated some wooden steps to 1300bx, bronze age.)

If you're in Europe, visiting an old salt mine is fun - an afternoon walking through tunnels hewn out of, well, dirty salt; sliding down wooden slides to the next level down, and depending on which one you visit, a boat ride over an underground salt water lake.

I Berchtesgaden
German; somewhat nice interactive map, English available, hardly any info or photos though: http://www.salzbergwerk-berchtesgaden.de/index.php?&L=10

II Hallstatt and others
Austrian; Austrian Salt Corp. web site (they run salt production in Austria, and run all three salt mine museums); only in German. (They don't seem to sell the rock salt samples online though - only expensive bath salt balls, ugly stone salt lamps, and touristy kitsch ("natural ancient-ocean salt" in a fake pseudo-celtic drinking mug ... at least it's cheap  :)

There's more salt mine museums (Poland, Switzerland)

Oh, and in Kansas: http://www.roadsideamerica.com/story/12232

We've got rock salt lamps back in Vegas.  Naturally, as with anything that's just come out of an industrial box after going through the postal system, and that has an electrical cord coming out of it, I had to lick one.

Well, I have quite a few Clear Glass Windows. Somewhere in the back of my closet is a large lump of Petrified Wood and from what I can recall, large amounts of Copper Pipe Sections in my basement.

I have a silver amulet that's encrusted with star sapphire (well, only one in the center, but still), and which menaces with spike(s) of silver. Made it myself even. It's on my keychain O.o; Hope no one makes any mandates.

Yes, I know, it's blurry as all get-out. It's the camera's fault, I swear!

Don't really have specific objects (apart from what is to be expected in anyones house) but as a kid i did "collect" minerals. (mostly gem related though, like raw ruby in stone and stuff like that)

I have a Small Desert Scorpion corpse sealed in a bubble of clear glass.  Something I got from some local tourist trap or another.  Thats all I can think of.
