Oh, that reminds me. Years ago, there was a similar tournament hosted here, and I believe its rules were:
1. Your creature must be able to finish a fight against itself
2. No transforming your opponents
There was no [CREATEITEM] yet, so that wasn't a rule, but I think obsidian casting would have also been banned.

I kinda feel like when someone build a strat for one environment it might not work in others which leaves them to use fallbacks.
I do ponder if grates with a chasm under it for an arena might work for keeping the creature moveset intact but canceling out the mechanic?
though who knows what the next year interaction and syndrome pool gives us and folks just turning themselves into no clipping ghosts and just stay several layers under ground and start casting death spells.
do find it a bit fun how arcane this tournament.

I wonder someone would have made a creature that rip limbs off that would transform into a creature that on death turn into pool of water and a pool of magma and the idea was send those bits after the opponent in hopes of them dying and obsidian casting the opponent.

If you are asking if having a chasm below the creatures will prevent obby-casting, it will not. Check out   vs Phoeball in the round 1 video at the Chasm arena at 23:58 in the video.

Being able to finish yourself in a fight sounds like it could be a good rule.

Here's what was said earlier about transforming:
So with polymorphing: You can counter it, by simply transforming your creature into another creature first, namely with the syndrome you can apply before the match starts. And while you are another creature, the game protects you from being transformed into something else. You can only be polymorphed into one thing. Its a little more confusing than that, as you can clearly see by what happens with xzaxza's sheepification ray, but this is the gist of it.
So, I'm thinking if everyone is pretty much required to apply a syndrome to themselves before that match starts that makes transforming impossible, maybe just ban transforming so we don't have to mess with applying the syndromes to grant transformation immunity?

Greetings and Salutations,

Fellow titanmongers, demigod-forgers, beastcraft artisans, corrupt dwarven overseers, and also žat oon kobold in že back, hark! And hear now the voice of že tournament -
From hence forth, žere shall be placed but a single burden upon že shoulders of žeelike žat would seek to maketh war, žrough že divyne spectacle of že arena, to earn their creature's rightful place as Kynge and Lord, most Sovereign amongst all MEGABEASTS.

Rule that Shall Be Imposed is thus:

An interaction which may spawn ę̄gžer hardcoded water, hardcoded magma, nor most certainly žat foul combination žereof, upon žose tiles žat which are inhabited by another creature, under penalty of whate'er happens to seem like a good idea at the že time.

The green bits are throwing me off. It looks like it says "either" but then it clearly says "nor". Also, it's a list of three things, but "either" and "neither" both only accept two. I guess it's saying we can only spawn one or the other but not both.

Here's what I think it means:
Quote
An interaction may spawn either hardcoded water or hardcoded magma, and certainly must not spawn that foul combination thereof, especially upon those tiles that are inhabited by another creature.

The Rule is written in crazy, and has little to no requirement to respect the modern English grammatical conventions for which one might expect rules, in general, to obey, so as to promote their intention with the greatest of transparency, and dispel the obstacle of confusion which might surround them.  But yes, you are quite correct. That is what the Rule is communicating.

Obsidian tile making is fine. However, the act of spawning tiles of water and/or magma on tiles which are occupied by creatures is what shall be forbidden.

If someone accidently obsidian casts a creature during a game, the game ends, and then it gets scores as a game loss for whoever ended up casting the creature. Then it goes on to the next game.

Just watching the round 9 match between spellmaster and   again trying to figure out what happened; perhaps spellmaster survived the obbycasting because he jumped?

Good on you for doing that, because I don't think most people spent too much time trying to figure it out. Its obviously in part due to some kind of bug with the AI, which just happens to be rare enough that most of us haven't really concerned ourselves with it. I think over the course of the tournament, I think we saw exactly two instances where the AI broke?

It would be kind of neat to learn what the odds are for its occurrence, maybe what causes it, and additionally what the ramifications are of its triggering. I hosted the actual gamelog from that particular game, in the event anyone wanted to really dissect the play by play of what happened over the course of that game.

" " can use its signature interaction as many times as it wants. As evidenced by that one opener I did, where... Wait a minute. That one opener I did. What happened? Didn't most of the creatures get turned into wagons and then collapse into logs on the spot? Why weren't they cast into obsidian tiles?

Maybe they were out of range, or there's a limit to how many creatures the ai is allowed to target simultaneously, or how many interactions/interaction effects are permitted to occur simultaneously.

I'm kinda wondering if there could be "weight classes" like in martial arts. One class as unrestricted as possible, another with, say, no syndromes, etc.

I personally would be interested to see a melee only variation. What's more glorious than charging at the opponent and beating them while they beat you until only one remains?

It could be bit much for a small event though.

On melee-only division, would interactions still be allowed as long as they do no damage? What about an interaction that spawns a hostile creature next to your opponent? I think a melee-only division sounds cool, though.

Is the no-syndromes for the melee-only division, or is that its own division?

Tbh I think a bunch of "divisions" would be too much for one person to manage. Thats a lot of work. Certainly so if they all happened around the same time.

It'd be cool to have a DFHack tool or something to provide a heads up display on the status of the contenders. Show missing body parts.

And then get Announcement Window+ or something similar up so the game doesn't need to be paused to read the combat info. And people watching can pause the video on their own whenever they want to read it more closely.

Yeah. Maybe it should/could be a different iteration between the heavyweight events, to keep things more interesting and challenging. Focusing on different things every once in a while, instead of endlessly honing the proven op strategies of the heavyweight stuff.
