How exactly would I go about making a species go extinct?  How would I become apex predator?

In seasons before, sudden death would apply if the new species would exceed the species limit of a given biome. Then the least populous species would be extinct.

Now, it is about resources. Right now, if you wanted a species to go extinct, you would either have to keep speciating and hopefully push them out, or wait for a catastrophic event to destroy/limit niches and be better at surviving the new world. Things are pretty lukewarm right now.

Well, the bacteria films are still alive, and so are their eaters. You could turn it into something else.

It's mostly used as an assist for the herbivores. Which they eat. As an adaptation it did evolve as a mistake, but turned out quite well. Originally it was meant to be used as signaling and marking, nothing more.
