Writing Style....
« on: July 27, 2024, 09:24:13 pm »

I have written a few stories in the story section and tried a few writing styles.  And I was wondering what do you think best FITS Dwarf Fortress?  Or is the best writing style for the stories the one the writer feels the most comfortable with?

This is usually the case. I think most people end up writing in a diary style when it comes to succession games, but any style can work pretty well. I think one or two people even tried a poetic style for their turn in the Museum III, which turned out really nicely!

Not sure if dying of old age is an honor or a shame for weaponmasters. On the one hand, it means they never got the opportunity to die in glorious battle. On the other hand, it means nothing could beat them in glorious battle.

You must use the same style in which everything in DF is written.

"This is an x. On the x is an image of Y. The image relates to Y being mutilated by Z."

Blue Dwarf has been happy lately. He did some !!science!! recently. He admired a fine forum post lately. He was enraged by a forum troll recently. He was upset by the delayed release of the new version of Dwarf Fortress lately. He took joy in planning a noble's death recently.

A couple decades ago, I wrote AARs and read many AARs for Europa Universalis 2, and I've been reading some here for DF and planning on writing one of my own.

For both games, it depends on the abilities of the writer and the story they want to tell, and most writers are mediocre at first and improve with practice.
For DF, it seems most like giving a narrative report of what happened in their game.
For EU2, it seemed most liked to give sweeping narratives that follows what happened in their game.

I most enjoy reading those that lean more towards narrative fiction and less to reporting on a game, but I like either.

It does seem like the epistolary style is well-suited for DF, and is the one I personally feel comes most natural.
Pick a dwarf and write letters (or a diary/log) as if they wrote them. I find it also gets me more invested in their lives to focus on one dwarf in this way.

really, the best style is the one that actually keeps you writing.
