You try to slap some sense into the sunglasses-less worker. His face contorts in a soundless wail as he tries to scratch out his own eyes. You make him a brick-maker to cheer him up. He curls up into a ball holding his ears and stays there for the rest of the day.
Meanwhile, it's become very fashionable for Gnomes to pass the time by copying the strange symbols the mute worker was drawing.

Everyone agrees this is a very good idea and they are totally safe. The mud that has been used to build the houses and mostly sits inert in a pile, however, is
deeply suspicious and therefor dangerous. The non-mud gatherers have been whispering among themselves and occasionally pointing and everything.
Even the big thinkers agree, who have come up with a really clever idea called a 'Think Tank'. If they think hard enough, then other Big Thinkers will see them thinking hard and they'll look cool and come think hard with them, and everyone will think harder because of it. This technology cannot be seen or heard, but the thinkers did think very hard today, and many nodding heads confirm that Big Thinkers have been thought of very strongly, so no doubt they're on their way. Now, if only they had homes to live in.
One clever Gnome gets ahead of the crowd and starts making headway on woodworking. This mostly involves poking the remaining stick and looking perplexedly at the fallen tree from all angles, but many a great Gnome technology has started from even humbler beginnings.
