I think you have to drop the current weapon and the the weapon you want to equip then pick up the one you want to equip first. The other one you pick up will go into your backpack.

that will work, but actually you don't need to drop the weapon you want to use. just drop the other things, until you're only holding the weapon.  but make sure you [r]emove it from any container first.

basically a weapon is "wielded" if it's in your hand.  same for shields.  but for armor and clothes, you must [w]ear it.

also note: when your weapon gets stuck in a monster and you lose possession, i think you need to grab it with your hand (not your arm or whatever) to regain it, though i'm not sure about that.

Also, the townspeople might have frozen to death if the town is located in a cold area.  Interesting little game quirk.  Otherwise, if you set a fire it might have killed them...  Those are the only two ways I can think of unless you killed them intentionally.

When you lose possession of a weapon you've stuck in a part of the opponent body, you need to
a) hit "A" and then hit enter to enter wrestling mode and target the desired opponent.
b) then, with your free hand (usually at the bottom of the list) grab the weapon.
c) Once this is done, hit "I" and select your weapon in the list (if you have many things on you and in your containers, the weapon is way down. Hit * until you see it at the very bottom),
d) then select the only option which is to claim the weapon back to you.

You might need to do that many times before you are successful, for a weak monster it's probably faster or less bothersome to kill it first, with another weapon or by wrestling it to death. I usually try to choke them to death, practice the wrestling skill.

I've never had to go into wrestling mode to reclaim a weapon, just hit 'I' when you're in range and you should have the option to grab your sword.

I have a question, Sometimes I get a message like "The mangrove wagon has been scuttled." when I start a game (not sure if only as human). What does that mean?

When the weapon is merely stuck, you already have the hold on the weapon because you were already wielding it. If you, in any other case, lose possession (as mentioned), then you need to enter wrestling mode to have your hand on the weapon first before trying to reclaim it.

That's what most players won't think about when it happen.

As for scuttling, I'm pretty sure it's just a placeholder oddity.  Normally in Fortress Mode you have to have a road for wagons to visit, but if they come and you destroy the road while they're still on the map, their head asplode because they can't find a way out.  So they scuttle.

So when a wagon happens to spawn in a human town in adventure mode, there's no real road for it, and it dies instantly.  The weird part is that this goes into the history and legends as "In 1052, was scuttled in Humanville" since wagons don't have names.  In the next version wagons can bear to exist without a road under them, so I assume scuttling will be removed.  So don't worry about it.
