Urist Mushroomladles, overseer at Granitewaves, was having a bad morning. He had been going over the accounts for the all-important Granitewaves crabcakes, the sole trade good produced by the community of fisherdwarves on this desolate and stony beach. Exports to the neighbouring hillocks were down, exports to the elves were down, exports to the mountainhome were down, and exports to the humans were... down.

Of course, his detractors would attribute this to the unpopularity of dwarven cuisine, or the use of giant elephant seal blubber, Forgotten Beast meat and royal jelly in the crab cake fillings. In fact, it was probably some kind of recession. If only, if only he could find a way to boost the Granitewaves brand recognition and expand the customer base.

Shouting from the courtyard broke his reverie. Outside in the downpour stood a diminutive crab man, devoid of armour or weapons, clutching a sodden poster for the annual Gladiator Championships.

Now that might just work.

The pet of a hopeful, and nearly blind, young dwarf who believes his very big pet lizard will have what it takes to honour Armok and become the champion gladiator. Armed with the best kitchen knife his owner could find, Howard is certain that he will get smashed into a paste in the first five minutes.

Name: Crackling Ice (or Crackle, for short)
Manager: MaiseNow
Race: Crow Man (female) (260 pts)

Equipment:  (125 pts)
  Iron Whip = 48 pts (24 x 2)
  Iron Helm = 24 pts (12 x 2)
  Iron Mail Shirt = 48 pts (24 x 2)
  Leather High Boots = 5 pts (10 x .5)

  Lasher = Skilled (60 pts)
  Armor User = Competent (12 pts)
  Discipline = Skilled (30 pts)

Leftover points = 3
(If my math is wrong, please let me know)

Backstory:

Her name in Crowman language is literally an imitation of the sound of ice crackling in a freshly poured drink, which is hard to translate to Common, so she uses the sound's description instead.

Once an apprentice to a self-proclaimed mage dwarf, Crackle was released from her duty upon her master's untimely death during a failed test of his "flight spells"*. She joined the monster hunter's guild to find a new purpose, and performed that job admirably as a new recruit. It's been a year or two, and she's getting better at fighting. Recently, she saw a poster advertising the tournament at a tavern in a human capital city, and decided to sign up to test her skills. Crackle is not confident in her ability to win against more seasoned fighters, but she also has nothing to lose except her life.

* Crackle is actually a D&D character I wrote up a while back. Since there isn't much non-necromantic magic in DF yet, I had to modify her somewhat to make her useable within the system we have. Normally she's actually a wizard, and her backstory is that she was a mad wizard's raven who transformed into a ravenman after accidentally absorbing her master during a magical accident.

Steelblood Deathedge is the coolest wolf man of all time, and all who disagree will meet his blade!

Born a Prince and Heir to the fierce mercenary tribe of wolfmen known as Mort-Garou, he was poised to become the greatest swordswolf in history. But after a bloody battle saw Steelblood badly injured and his father's sister's son's friend's former neighbour dead, the young wolf grew disillusioned with the life of his ancestors. He now lives the exact same life as before, but on his own, constantly on the run from his old family. He travels the world with just his ancestral greatsword to keep him company, and just his sharp wit to keep death at bay. Also there's a dark curse placed on him or something.

Finding himself dangerously low on money and affirmation, Steelblood Deathedge joins the IXth Gladiator Tournament, hoping to make a name for himself in this new world, and perhaps to prove that his tragic backstory and kick-ass name were not made up on the spot for the cool factor.

Archelaus had thought he was set for life; he was the right-hand man of a wealthy king, lived in almost unrivaled luxury, and had even built a fairly decent reputation for himself. However, things didn't go quite according to plan after his king decided to pick a fight with a giant hippo while out hunting.

The ensuing succession crisis ended quickly, but with one of Archelaus' rivals on the throne. Fearing that he would soon be dismissed, probably into the magma reservoir, Archelaus made the obvious choice; usurp the throne for himself. If all went according to plan, he would live in even greater luxury and earn more prestige run the kingdom far better than his rivals could ever hope to manage.

Unfortunately, the gods had other plans. Despite Archelaus' best efforts and well-laid schemes, a series of coincidences, (un)lucky breaks, and an accomplice falling into the giant leech farm caused his plans to go utterly awry. Forced into exile, Archelaus fled his rival's assassins to the only place he knew they wouldn't dare follow: the Arena, where glory and a new fortune or a horrible death await.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Mr Fun Guy is a hell of a popular mayor.  Ever since he took charge down here, the sporadic frog-man invasions have stopped, the economy has been mushrooming, and some dwarves even say that the booze itself has tastes better.  Recently, though, some of his political rivals have been stirring up nonsense rumors, alleging that he’s not a real dwarf!  Mr Fun Guy could easily win his voters back with a single speech, but (and I think this is really admirable) he always defends his honor with actions, not words.  That is why he has entered the Arena—when the world sees him down in that sand pit, it will be plain as dacite that he’s more of a dwarf than any of us could ever be.
