There's the rub, I feel.
You took a very big risk, and it didn't pan out.
It's not fair to the manager to blame their upgrade choices for your misfortune. It's not like they asked you to go all-in on them.

Please keep their feelings and the atmosphere of the tournament in mind when making comments like that.

In any case, better luck next year!

Lol, I did not mean it that way, I simply explained the rationale behind the bet :) Take it easy.

Well damn, I was gonna bet on Drekkar for the last round and missed the deadline. Time to make up for that: all 51 gold on the Captain!

Also, that was a hell of a fight between Kraken and Sir Capybarrian, nice job to both.

The Loser's Battle Royale
« Reply #231 on: August 09, 2024, 01:21:57 pm »

Do you hear it? The rattling of lifeless lungs, wheezing as they fill with air once more? The creaking of cold limbs finding their strength anew with dreadful purpose? Your ears don’t deceive you, friends, the dead rise again! Come one come all, and bear witness to the Loser’s Battle Royale! 40 slain fighters of this year’s tournament have been resurrected by our necromancers for one final free-for-all showdown, for the glory of Armok! Which one will earn a second chance at life, in this brutal trial by combat? Win or lose, these warriors have more punishment left in store for them, so let's not keep them waiting any longer. Let the battle royale begin!

-3070. Mikey The Gorlak’s guts are spilled by a stab from Howard’s large steel dagger.
-3086. Rudolf Lundgren is beheaded by Howard’s large steel dagger.

Battered and bloodied by a myriad of brutal blows in this mad free-for-all, Myth-O-Man limps forward with growing determination. Once bested in the first round of the tournament, he’s now proven beyond the shadow of a doubt that he can go toe-to-toe with some of the fiercest fighters this year’s tournament had to offer. With growing confidence, he hefts his silver whip, eyes narrowing on the only foe left between him, and victory. From humble roots of a turbulent upbringing, and a further humbling in the arena, Myth-O-Man now stands poised to snatch glory from this bloody affair.

Howard skitters into the mothman’s path with characteristic jitteriness, eagerly carving into Rudolf Lundgren. Having met his end in the Quarter Finals to the dastardly Captain Drekkar, this housepet now stands with a surprising kill tally to his name in this battle alone. Perhaps we were all too quick to judge his young owner when he registered his little lizard pet into the arena. But if Howard wants to return to the comfort of his owner’s embrace, he’ll have to survive the wild onslaught of Myth-O-Man, who charges in out of nowhere! As their weapons swing wildly, it's anyone’s guess which of these fighters had the more questionable caretakers, and more importantly, who will survive their murderous duel?

-3114. Myth-O-Man’s brains are torn after a stab to the head from Howard’s large steel dagger.

Exhausted by the ordeal, Howard stands over the corpse of his final foe. Alone in the charnel pit of the loser’s battle royale, he’s incredibly come out the other side with barely a scratch sustained, to the thunderous cheers of his many fans. Sparing Myth-O-Man one final glance, the little lizard skitters off towards the loudest of his supporters; his young master, little Urist Mcdwarf. Though he returns not as the champion of this year’s tournament, he is reunited with his adoring owner at long last. Perhaps his master’s affection is all the reward little Howard truly wished for…

Congratulations to Howard for not only being the winner of this year’s Loser’s Battle Royale, but for coming out the other side with the highest kill tally! To the rest of the fighters, you make us proud for fighting, and dying once more for the glory of our dreadful god, Armok!

Finale Upgrade Reveal

Kraken"
Finals baby! So close to retirement. Training like never before, Kraken will increase his axeman to professional and his dodging to accomplished.

Math note, this can be done keeping the pools separate if you stagger the upgrades between the two skills.

Captain Drekkar:
Pool 1: 226.50 points

Expert -> Master swordsman (-210 points)

Armour user -> Competent (-12 points)

Points check: 226.50 – 210 – 12 = 4.5 remaining

Pool 2: 210 points

Sell leather cap – 2.5

Sell iron breastplate – 20

(210+2.5+20) = 232.5

Iron Helm -24

Iron gauntlets -16

Steel breastplate -80

Iron chain leggings -32

Steel cutlass -80

Points check: (210+2.5+20)-24-16-80-32-80 = 0.5

Damn. so you're saying that the small bean Leppo pulped in the first round of the original tourney, had the potential to come back and defeat every last fighter?! some kind of ur-fighter, this Myth-o-Man.

Howard is, and will always be, king.

The Finale

Finale: Captain Drekkar the Human vs Kraken the Minotaur
Gamelog: https://pastebin.com/g06gZp2w

Welcome ladies and gentlebeings, from every corner of this world, to the finale of the 9th annual Dwarf Fortress Gladiator Tournament. Please welcome the first  of our gladiators, the swashbuckler Captain Drekkar (managed by Quantum Drop)! He has unzipped Urist McDwarf’s belly, manhandled Melon Tusk’s throat, hewn Howard’s head off, and replaced Rugard’s brain with his sword inside of his skull! Emerging from his gate with a shiny new suit of armor and a steel cutlass to complement his iron one, Drekkar seems to have spared no expense to protect himself as he nears his victory.

Coming from the opposite gate is Kraken (managed by Asheeer)! The bulky minotaur appears the same as ever, with his steel great axe and simple iron helm, but he’s been intensely training to reach this final moment. To get here, he triumphed over Tree Dweller, gave Grovewarden Gaia to the grave, euthanized Uvash, and slew Sir Capybarrian. If he desires to permanently escape his maze and live a life of luxury, this is his second to last fight this year. Though if he just wants to escape, it will be his last…

Would everyone please rise for the annual recitation of our anthem (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=02nLHpSLTxo)? Gladiators, at the end, the bell shall be rung, and your fight will begin. Akur Akir Akam!

*DING!*

Kraken strikes first, but Captain Drekkar merely steps to the side of the great axe, responding with a strike from one of his cutlasses! Kraken catches it on the haft of his great axe, shoving it aside as he swings again, while the supple captain, agile as the waves he once sailed, moves around the blow again! Licking out with his steel cutlass, the Captain draws first blood, a long gash on Kraken’s forearm. The sight of blood merely seems to enrage the minotaur, as he strikes again! Captain Drekkar stands still this time though, catching the blow on his swords, before striking forward to stab into Kraken’s right bicep.

A casual twist of the sword tears it free, and leaves Kraken bellowing in pain as he loses his grip on his steel great axe and it clatters to the arena floor. Kraken quickly readjusts to the situation, swinging out with his meaty fist, but Drekkar ducks under it and strikes at Kraken’s unprotected right thigh, the sword sinking in until it smashes against bone. The minotaur collapses to the blood slicked ground as his leg gives out beneath him. Kraken attempts to strike out against his foe with his horns, teeth, and functioning hand, but Captain Drekkar is never where he seems to be, ducking, dodging, and slashing with his swords like the arms of a great spinning storm, spraying more and more minotaur blood into the air with each successful strike. Kraken’s strikes grow weaker and weaker, as first his left forearm, and then his right fall away from his body. As the pool of blood around him grows, the minotaur seems to fold in on himself, but the merciless Captain continues his attack, stabbing again and again into his thick chest. One final draw of the sword across Kraken’s belly spills his intestines, ending his life, but perhaps giving him the peace he has always desired.

Congratulations Captain Drekkar! You are the winner of the 9th annual Dwarf Fortress Gladiator Tournament! But to be our champion, you must first best Logem Branchsyrup!

Championship

Championship Match: Captain Drekkar vs Logem Branchsyrup the Wolverine Man
Gamelog: https://pastebin.com/jZL8upyq

Image of Logem by Eris: https://imgur.com/a/tlSY2oC

The central gate underneath the manager’s balcony opens, revealing last year’s triumphant wolverine man. The crowd cheers as their maple leaf emblazoned champion emerges into the light, smoking one last cigar as he gives them all a few quick waves. Pulling it out, he gestures to a dwarf attendant, who hurries over with a tray.

“Keep it warm, alright?”, Logem Branchsyrup says. “I’ll be back quick enough. Try and find me some celebratory beers if you can too.”

Logem draws his shining blue adamantine katana, the crowd going into polite silence as he assumes his ready stance.

“Hi, how ya doing bub, I’m Logem, nice ta meet ya finally, but now I’m gonna be killing ya.”

Captain Drekkar ignores the banter of his competition, merely cleaning his swords of minotaur blood with a proffered cloth from his own attendant, and assumes his own stance of readiness. On the bell gentlemen!

*DING!*

With it’s second to last ring this year, the arena’s bell heralds the beginning of the Championship match! Logem wastes no time in charging towards his opponent, his katana humming as it chews through the air. All the booze and cigars he’s consumed over the last year appear to have had no effect on his wolverine man metabolism! As the two clash, the blue blade flashes through air, silk cloak, and flesh alike! Captain Drekkar lets out a cry of alarm as his steel cutlass drops from his numb right arm!

Striking back with his remaining iron blade, Logem merely takes the hit on his steel gauntlet, striking again at the human’s wounded arm, further bloodying him.

“Can it all end so quickly?” wonders Captain Drekkar. “Begone fear!”, he reminds himself, refusing to give in.

Logem brings him back to reality with a sharp stab to the foot, tearing up those pale leather boots that Drekkar has worn his entire time here. As he falls, he lashes out at Logem, but the strike again bounces off the wolverine man’s formidable shell. The riposte from Logem tears through his helm, drawing gasps and early cheers from the crows, but Drekkar appears to have jerked his head out of the way at the last moment, leaving him with a ripped helm and head, but his brains still intact and in the fight!

The adamantine katana and iron short sword clash several more times, but once again Logem penetrates Drekkar’s guard, as well as his right thigh. As the katana gets stuck in the human’s thigh, Drekkar attempts to take advantage of Logem’s lapse of focus to hammer at him with his sword, but his strikes simply clang off of Logem’s armor again. As Logem wrenches his sword free and causes a new wave of blood to spread across the arena floor, one of Drekkar’s strikes lands square on the wolverine man’s gut, causing him to take a step back as the wind is knocked out of him.

Logem stands there, bent over, for but a few moments, before a horrible salvering snarl comes out of his jaws, and he launches himself forward, yelling “ALRIGHT, NO MORE MR. NICE GUY!”

Logem’s sword sweeps clean through Captain Drekkar’s left foot, leaving him with a nice place for a peg leg if he survives, but currently in a lot of pain from the missing body part. The enraged wolverine man doesn’t stop there, as his sword carves its way through one of the captain’s gauntlets, and parts through chain links to remove his right leg in its entirety. The blue blade hums hungrily through the air as it cleaves through all resistance to its progress, and Captain Drekkar’s strikes against Logem grow weaker. The captain stabs out with his trusty iron cutlass one last time, the one he has had since his very first showing, striking squarely against Logem’s gut. But instead of disemboweling him, as was done to Kraken, the point merely bounces off his steel mail shirt. Having spent the last of his strength, the cutlass and the arm wielding it fall limply into the still pool of blood around his maimed body.

The final ring of the bell breaks Logem from his maddended state, as he staggers backwards out of the mess he created, shaking some of the blood from his blade and steel boots. While the crowd cheers on his second victory defending his championship, placing him among such exalted figures as Beorge Gush and Molurus, Logem marches back into his gate, grabbing his still-warm cigar. The dwarf attendant could swear he heard him mutter “Need ta practice more of that effin’ meditation stuff”.

***

Thank you all for participating, and if you would like to see whether or not Logem Branchsyrup can become the first champion to hold the title for 3 years in a row, or submit a new gladiator and try to wrest it away from him, then come back next year! There is a possibility that we will return to the subreddit next year, given that it appears to be sticking around, so we’ll keep you posted and let you know when it’s time.
