Burrows for civilians
« on: June 12, 2024, 02:40:24 am »

Hi all, I'm still playing 47.04 because this is what my package manager is willing to install. Now, this is a difficult version, and I have trouble keeping my dwarfs happy.

I want to split my civilians into two groups, one that never sees the surface, and one that never sees the caverns. I created two overlapping burrows, assigned members, and linked them to the "Inactive" civilian alert.

I am aware that dwarfs will still stroll outside their burrow - but in my fortress they are taking jobs from outside their burrows, for instance dropping a corpse, to the dump, also outside their burrow! Which is what I wanted to prevent.

It seems I'm having something fundamentally wrong. Any ideas?

No replies, so it must be something weird  ;) Not the first weird thing in my fortress...

So what I've done is:
  • Created two burrows
  • Linked them both to the civilian alert. They are shown as "active" there
  • Added some dwarfs to the one, and some to the other burrow

Is that so far correct?

I remember trying to steer vermin catchers with burrows, it didn't work either.  Evidently some odd jobs ignore them.

The wiki makes this claim, and I've just confirmed it against a disassembly:
Quote
Unlike individual citizen burrow assignments, a civilian alert will apply to all fort civilians and animals. It will order them to go and stay inside the burrows defined in the alert for as long as the alert is active and includes any. Additionally, for that time individual assignments are ignored.

Basically, in order for individual unit burrow assignments to work, your currently active civilian alert must be empty.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.
