Weapon type discussions

I know, it's probably old, since this part of the game hasn't really changed much in a long time -- but regardless, what would you guys say is the best class of weapon?

Personally I prefer the axe. It has similar damage to hammers and maces and such, but it severs limbs rather than simply mangling them, and since a severed limb can't be hit again it makes it more likely that you'll actually cause additional meaningful injury. They don't fare so well against some of the upper-end monsters though, from what I've seen... though minotaurs and cyclopses still fall fairly easily (particularly if you have someone to take hits for you)

I also prefer axes.  The great axe has only 10 less base damage than the maul, and as mentioned it severs limbs, making it increasingly more likely that you'll hit a critical area.  I think anything that can't be killed with an axe can likely be killed by throwing..... spears.

 ;)

So far I'd have to say that crossbows rock. You can snipe from quite a distance in the new version and at high skills you can nearly rapid-fire. Plus you can smack things around pretty good with it without much hammering skill if that one adventurer I played was any indication.

What about normal bows? Comparable to xbows?

To be honest, after my recent mishap of shipping out with wrestling instead of mace, wrestling is my favorite. If it's played right, you can keep three or four enemies unconscious at all times. I was doing quite well gouging eyes and strangling until I got surrounded and my arm was broken. Wasn't even the minotaur that did it. Dang batmen.

Wrestling is powerful, but you better be damn good at it and plenty agile if you want that to be your mainstay against most everything.  If you miss the grabs, have them broken, or have to keep adjusting them too long, you're sunk, and until it's possible to literally rip enemies apart, wrestling will only slow down the undead (since they don't bleed, don't feel pain, and don't even breathe, which makes even the moddable neck-breaking not so useful).

That's when you start punching. A couple times, when faced with zombies and (for various reasons) no weapon attack, I have made a grab with my shield (somehow) and proceeded to punch the zombies until they stopped moving. The grab was to keep them in place, as well as to keep me from swinging with my shield instead.

Hammers are my favorite, but my elven swordsmen seem to live the longest.

Whips are definitely the crappiest, to my dismay.

I like spears but they seem to be nowhere near as effective as maces/hammers/axes :/

Also I would use ranged weapons more but I don't know where I'm supposed to get ammo. Has this been corrected in the new version?

Wrestling is good as long as you don't fight undead.
Then, I prefer hammers. It breaks limbs, causes either unconscioussness or impossibility to fight/stand up, but it don't cause bleeding, so it's good to put your enemies out of order and let them die alone.
Or you have to be really tough, because it's an exhausting thing.

You're kidding, right?
Spears have CRIT_BOOST of 2. It makes them deadliest weapons in the game after the bows and xbows.

Right now it doesn't matter what melee weapon you pick except early on. Obviously if you're fighting a crit-immune monster you want a maul but once you get good enough weapon skill and a decent weapon you can kill pretty much anything, because   the bonuses they give you ramp up very quickly. If you blow all your points on an Accomplished weapon skill at character creation and then buy a nice weapon at a town you'll get an idea of what I mean (although you'll be terribly fragile and slow compared to an adventurer more sanely built).

Once you get that kind of skill exertion is more dangerous than most foes.

My preferd weapon is a hand full of dead kobolds.
Yesterday I was using two dead kobold bodys as my weapons. They worked very well. Maby it was just luck but I killed 3 goblin guards in one fight and just after that another one with nothing more then my two dead kobolds and a xfoxleatherrobex

I'd have to say the most FEARED weapon is definitely anything that shoots. I just lost a very angry adventurer to a zombie, because the zombie had a crossbow, and got enough time to shoot it by like two turns. I just gotten to melee range when he fired, piercing my lung, liver, and heart. I killed the bastard, but still...
