Old Versions: Does anyone still play them?
« on: June 09, 2024, 01:33:51 am »

I'm not just talking about 47.05, or even 34.11, but versions even as far back as 28.181.40d or 23.130.23a. Every now and then I play around in the old versions and I wonder if I'm one of the only people on the planet who would bother playing such an old version of the game.

I only play those old versions, and I've even backported "modern" versions of DFHack to them (specifically, both 0.28.181.40d and 0.23.130.23a).

Edit: I've also produced a multitude of binary patches to fix various bugs in those old versions.

It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

I would definitely apply these if I had the faintest idea how to do so.

This seems pretty straightforward and will probably be simple enough to accomplish as soon as I manage to get 23a DFHack compiled without it spitting error messages at me.

Here’s the section of the DFHack-23a documentation that deals with patching:

For what it's worth, that section is exactly the same as the bit you linked to earlier.

If you actually want to apply binpatches to 23a without compiling DFHack, you can download them here and then just use the "binpatch.exe" that comes with later versions of DFHack. I don't think I ever added my 40d binpatches to the DFHack-40d repository, so those would have to be applied the old-fashioned way (namely, by opening dwarfort.exe in a hex-editor, seeking to the specified addresses, then applying the patches by hand).

Thanks for the information. I think I have it figured out and can now play 23a the way it was meant to be played. Didn't mean to turn this thread into a tech support ticket.

I only play those old versions,
Is it a nostalgia thing, or do you think they're genuinely superior?

Perhaps they're still testing new ways to set an industry around the bones of certain sea creatures.

It varies - I occasionally play version 0.23 because of how different it is, I play 0.28 because it was the last version with the Economy, and I play 0.31 because it was the last version before things like vampires and werecreatures and necromancers were added.

Perhaps they're still testing new ways to set an industry around the bones of certain sea creatures.
There's no need for remarks like that.
