Watchers in the Starry Sky (8/8): Second Astral Century

Year 0 of the Astral Age

In the prosperous city of Vendra there is a grand celebration.

Their mighty phalanxes were victorious over the hated enemy, the now sacked city of Pundlo, and have returned to Vendra carrying piles of precious fabrics and looted jewellery and herds of livestock and captives.

Celebratory wines and meads flow freely from crocks and amphoras. Dancing figures and singing and revelry echoes through the night.

And of course, in the the newly paved open air pillared circle at the top of an unassuming hill near the outskirts of Vendra, Mantios smiled happily as captured soldiers and cattle and rugs and fine jewels were presented to him.

Mantios had promised Vendra victory over her enemies, and had demanded tribute to the lords of the starry sky. Of course, Mantios had made those lords up a few years ago, in shining Zanas, many miles to the south, but these savage warlike hillfolk didn't need to know.

With great ceremony, Mantios began to burn silks worth more than fine horses, and sacrificial blood splattered on marble, all to honour the lords of the starry sky, as battlewounded warriors paid respects around the open aired pillared circle.

And the lords of the starry skies heard the chants, felt the splash of hot blood, smelt the rich smoke, saw the world, so far far far away.

For the people of the world knew them, if only dimly and vaguely, and so in turn they knew the world also, though again dim and vague.

Mantios's neck hairs pricked up, and he felt an uncanny sense of being... watched, by the stars. But he brushed it aside to focus on finishing up the ceremony. Eventually the audience dispersed back to the wider festivities, and all that remaining was the lightly smoking ashes of expensive treasures.

   ***

Arkhun laughs boisterously amongst their brother-soldiers, drinking the most, eating the most, and talking the most. Most look at Arkhum adoringly, some enviously, resentment hidden behind smiling faces.

   ***

Badul is nestled deep in the hills, far from 'civilization'. Here the people hunt, and gather, and farm only little. They are strong and fit, but insular and distrustful. They remember old stories, and dream of times before the low-folk built their stone walls. Simpler times. Bloodier times.

   ***

Pundlo may have been broken, but many soldiers and citizens have fled into the wilderness, fires of determination and revenge burning in their breasts.

Appearance: The stars have been misplaced. Where there is a lack of pattern, there is pattern. Gleaming glittering points of light dance in a senseless dance, which only the most observant will notice is wrong, at first...
True Name: livILvL
Sign: A single, forked line, with two spokes leading nowhere.
One Personality Trait: Considers itself the most intelligent of watchers.
One Historical Fact: Once touched the object of its desire, only to find it was just a dream, as easily popped as a soap bubble. It swore to never again destroy something so fragile and beautiful.
Hidden Secret: Deeply wishes to touch the object of its desire.

Appearance: The 8-sided star. Harbinger of wind and tidings, which reduce all to nothing but uncertainty. The whirls which asunder all civility.
True Name: Mgepr'luh
Sign: The eight points of a compass, misaligned in a spiral from a single point.
One Personality Trait: Harborous
One Historical Fact: Those lost to the stars have all found their home. Even now they work to explore it's endless expanse, gone mad with solitude and company both. Lost to their own desires. Never leaving the start, let never staying for long.
Hidden Secret: While they scatter civilization, they rather enjoy mortals trying to survive and learn.

Appearance: A sickly green unstar dancing about the sky in a way no star should. At its brightest, its light curiously leaves no shadows.
True Name: Akhethminphozdu, or some say Akhethminphodzu
Sign: A snake pursuing its tail around a circle, or more abstractly, two concentric circles, the outer one broken.
One Personality Trait: Determined: at its worst, stubborn; at its best, hopeful
Hidden Secret: Was betrayed, bested, and divided into 26 pieces, 13 of which were banished to some gloomy kingdom of night save a number (some say three) permitted to return for half a year as part of a hostage exchange. The secretier secret is that 26 soon became 24 by wicked astral cannibalism.

They ought to be pitied! They are already on a course for self-destruction! They do not need help from us. We need to redress our wounds, help our people, rebuild our cities!

Year 0 of the Astral Age

Mantios stirred uneasily in their sleep. They had been having troubled dreams for several nights now. Flashes of great pink sun. Of a smiling maw of stars. The sky, rent asunder and bleeding, flooding the seas of his home with red.

With a gasping shudder, Mantios sits bolt upright, forcibly tearing themselves free from the dreams, dragging their mind into wakefulness. Trembling slightly, though Mantios wasn't sure why, exhaustion, sickness... terror?, they got out of their luxurious bed, stumbling through their well-appointed house for some water.

But then to Mantios' horror, the visions and sounds and smells and feelings began to once more seep into his consciousness. No. No! He was awake? Wasn't he?

A cold crystal eye, carved from the finest diamond, vile black pupil dispassionately consuming Mantios' house, tearing it up brick by brick all around him, before bursting into green flame, dyeing the entire city before Mantios in shades emerald.

Mantios blinked frantically, pulling at his hair in a desperate attempt to wake himself. This wasn't real. It couldn't be real. He had made them up! A delirious starving street rat, dreaming up a dozen different gods to strike down those poncy priests, after they'd given him a beating for begging outside their temple.

A terrible wind began to howl, drowning out Mantios remaining thoughts, it grabbed him up, and flung him deep into the sky. A chill began to seep deep into his bones, as he watched Vendra shrinking away below. The stars were dancing now, dancing drunkenly, before great luminous chains snapped them into a spiderweb.

    ***

Dawn found Mantios clinging to the roof of his house, with no memory of how he had gotten there. His fingers were raw and bloody, his feet had some cuts from stepping on a broken tile. His nightclothes were dusted with faintly glowing powders. Fortunately, no one saw him as he painfully scrambled back down to the ground.

The Watchers have defined themselves, and lurk far far away in the starry skies. Perhaps as they watch and muse on the world of their desire, they may begin to move closer to it. Possibly, they maintain the equilibrium of their most remote perches by contemplating, and visualizing changes to their contemplations.

Ath'u Ath'u turns towards the world, yet another to consume/save, already it has been seen by a mortal, now it must act.

Ath'u Ath'u sends strange visions upon Mantios, eons seemingly pass, the stars grow old and die- the world twists and decays- Eight stars approach the world, seven rend of its earthen flesh while the eighth preserves it.
