out of control miasma, no obvious source
« on: February 10, 2024, 11:51:28 pm »

My first fort level is a giant dirt floor room, open by 3 square passageway for caravans. Large wood stockpile then carpenter, wood burners, ashery. The floor is all fungus from caverns, the rest of base going underground is hatch covered 3x3 staircase, and the main animal zone covers a large area outside and inside the room.
Two things started happening. First, cats and dogs are constantly being 'found dead'. DF Hack won't give a cause, just date of death.
Dwarves haul them to dump pretty quick but-
Second, large clouds of miasma are spawning, dissipating, and respawning. Constantly. Im in late winter 102, been going since spring 101.
I tore down and rebuilt buildings, looking for bodies, nothing. I can't find the recurring source. Any ideas wtf is going on?

I also can't find a df hack command to just clear all miasma. Right in my entrance, it's permanently affecting EVERYONE constantly.

Could be something designated as hidden? You can do an unhide designation on the area, or just search your stocks screen instead.

Check your stocks list for corpses and body parts described as "rotten". Failing that, look for rotten food.

Reading his name would trigger it. Thinking of him would trigger it. No other circumstances would trigger it- it was strictly related to the concept of Bill Clinton entering the conscious mind.

THE xTROLL FUR SOCKx RUSE WAS A........... DISTACTION        the carp HAVE the wagon

A wizard has turned you into a wagon. This was inevitable (Y/y)?

Nothing! I don't ever use hide stuff. Food is 5 z lvls deeper. This is giant room open to outside, pets wood and trade station. Over a dozen cats and dogs died, many of them outside, and miasma everywhere before it chilled out. Bodies all hauled before they rotted.
I deconstructed stuff, moved wood stockpile, nothing but respawning miasma on bare floors.

Again, on the deaths, no cause of death. dfhack just returned date of death, no cause. I kept clicking random cats and dogs, all 'healthy'.

Wiki says living creatures can emit miasma if they have necrosis.  It would also explain sudden deaths.  Are you perhaps in an evil biome, or are there brown recluse spiders or other similar vermin around?

That's whats interesting and frustrating at the same time about this game wtf is going on isn't handed out crisp and clear on a silver platter it takes some investigation. But I never got to the bottom of this. Calm biome, I didn't look for bc's or even think of something like that the animals just had a major die-off young and old, all 'healthy' upon inspection cause of death just 'death'. Never solved it but it stopped.

Almost certainly a "syndrome", then.  It's likely to be "deadly dust" because your dwarfs will track it through your fortress and other ones will pick it up.  It's possible that even if you never fought a creature with deadly dust that *something* in the caverns did and your dwarfs walked through the dust.

After a while it goes away, which is exactly what you experienced.
