I already know how to get them and I have a vague idea what each one does, but I know that six people started with one (besides me, who also started with one), so seeing who claims having one is nice to know.  Plus, I do more depending on the Emeralds I get, which really only matters to me.

I wonder if you actually have a steal ability or if the above is just threatening bluffing with the hope of scaring others into emerald donations.  You lying about that being a factor in the game in order to steer the discussion away from important topics is also a plausible scenario, but the story seems a touch specific.
