Can't get soldiers to train
« on: December 06, 2023, 01:46:21 am »

I tried to issue a training order with constant training and they just stand around doing nothing. What do I do?

Did you designate a barracks zone and assign the squad(s) to it for training purposes?

Here are some screen shots: https://imgur.com/a/LuMb1Fz https://imgur.com/a/5uqLlyP The room with the beds (and the room below it) is zoned as the barracks.

Odd.  And the squad(s) are assigned the barracks?  You have to do that in addition to zoning it.

I'm not really familiar with the classic UI in 0.50.x, but that looks fine otherwise from what I can see.

Here is an example of a "schedule entry" that contains two orders:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
The first order is "Defend Burrow, at least 3". It means that when the squad is Active, 3 guys will go to the target Burrow and wait for intruders. Specifically, the burrow is painted at an entry point into the caverns where civilians are collecting silk, so if there is trouble, some soldiers are nearby and wearing all their armor. I use a similar order with another squad to keep a couple of soldiers near the trade depot's gate.
The second order is "Train, at least 3". It means that when the squad is Active, 3 guys will go to the barracks to Train.

Note that are 10 soldiers in the squad but only 6 are given orders each month. Each month, one might go off-duty while another goes on-duty, because it rotates which soldiers are on-duty each month. And some of the 4 soldiers who are off-duty might go to the barracks and start individual combat drills just because... At the same time, some of the 3 soldiers assigned to each order might leave their post to eat/drink/sleep which is why 3 are assigned to each order. I like this setup because the "schedule entry" can be copy/pasted for all 12 months and the dwarfs still get free time.

So you can see where you are using a "0", it means no soldiers will be assigned to the order.

There is something to be said about, if the stakes are as high, maybe reconsider your certitudes. One has to be aggressively allistic to feel entitled to be able to trust. But it won't happen to me, my bit doesn't count etc etc... Just saying, after my recent experiences I couldn't trust the public if I wanted to. People got their risk assessment neurons rotten and replaced with game theory. Folks walk around like fat turkeys taunting the world to slaughter them.

I think the problem is that you assigned a training order from the buttons on the squad main screen.
Go to schedule, click constant training (no need to set monthly orders) and cancel the order on the squad main screen.

It should read "No special orders" and "Routine: Constant training", like the first squad in this image: http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/File:Squad_menu_v50_04.png

This was at least the solution to stop my dwarfes from doing only indivual combat drills.

And don't set the minimum number of soldiers to 0. This minimum number is setting the maximum number of soldiers that will train.
