In Fortress mode, does everything I sell to the the merchants get destroyed once they leave the map? Be it artifacts, furniture, toys, etc... Or do they get distributed in the world in such a way where, as an Adventurer, I can possibly locate any trace of my fort's legacy/goods outside of its local region?

Last I knew they just disappear.  It WOULD be cool to trade them artifacts and masterpiece weapons and see as an adventurer, or in legends, what happened.

I've seen the pack animals of elf merchants living in forest retreats carry items from a fortress I had.

Before seeing this I thought they just disappeared. Haven't seen any items in actual use, though. Just hauled on pack animals.

Yeah, I believe they travel overland and are then forgotten about as property of the civ. Artifacts and books being an exception, given their status. Those should be added to personal collections and, in theory, should be able to be found somewhere.

Back in 40d, the caravans would travel across the world map to one of the trader civ's settlements, and if you happened to visit that site in Adventurer mode you'd find all of them just sitting there and causing lots of lag (and if there were any wagons, they would immediately scuttle themselves).

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.
