Bin Control Standing Orders
« on: October 09, 2023, 07:41:33 am »

The thrilling conclusion i hope to the pro-bin (they're good for storage and trade, save FPS, allows greater flow of goods onto the map) and the anti-bin (they're greedy, steal items, break barracks storage zones and archers and are hard to empty) arguement.

The ability to set categories aligned to stockpiles then further modify materials that are allowed similar to economic stones and cooking menu, in order to block or allow intake of materials inside bins on fortress grounds. In use, you could assign bins to stockpiles, but if i disabled ammunition from my bin-standing orders, no dwarves would haul to collect ammo to put inside bins, and they would actively start emptying bins into active stockpiles and storing the bin away seperately into a bin stockpile.

Or one could spend the time fixing the many issues with bins and barrels :-)  But, I agree that the fact that bins/barrels are automatically set when you go to the custom screen for stockpiles is incredibly unhelpful given that bins/barrels have so many finicky details you have to consider.  Honestly, IMHO, bins/barrels should *never* be the default.  You should have to set stockpiles to use them manually if you want to do it.

I was recently reminded that bin/barrel defaults used to be part of the d_init, which is a more elegant solution.

For some reason a lot of d_init settings weren't carried over, even though they have the easiest access through the options screen, which changes d_init in real time.

i read this thread title as 'birth control standing orders'

yeah I approve of this %100 and it's the sort of change we might even see implemented in our lifetimes
