Victory Against Venezuela - Puerto Rico Defended

After just over 15 days, the Venezuelan military was forced to retreat from the American Commonwealth of Puerto Rico after sustaining heavy losses. They had enjoyed the upper hand in the first week of the war and managed to occupy most of Puerto Rico with the capital city of San Juan being under siege. However this changed as our reinforcements poured in from the Mainland and quickly stole the initiative from the enemy. Inevitably the enemy suffered such heavy losses they withdrew from our territory to save their remaining troops. While the fighting is over, we are still technically at war with Venezuela until a peace treaty is signed. A military invasion of Venezuela unfortunately will result in the Soviet Union coming to their aid which would widen the conflict and could lead to a global thermonuclear war. As a result best we can do is keep Venezuela down until their government is overthrown or they engage in peace talks.

Chancellor Of Germany Assassinated

Tragedy struck in the Federal Republic of Germany when German (and former West German) Chancellor Helmut Kohl was brutally assassinated even as he was addressing the Bundestag regarding the worsening Franco-Soviet threat and their illegal occupation of sovereign German territory. The C.I.A. has confirmed that the assassination was carried out by K.G.B. operative Vladimir Putin who managed to escape into French embassy. The assassination greatly altered the political landscape in Germany with martial law being declared for the first time since the Second World War with the Acting Chancellor Klaus Kinkel assuming direct command over the Bundeswehr for the duration of the emergency. The United States condemned the actions of the Soviet Union and is considering some kind of response. Unfortunately security in the Soviet Union is extremely tight with the chance of any covert action being next to impossible. An economic embargo is pointless since the United States had cut off all trade with the Soviet Union after Gorbachev was overthrown in August 1991. Another is a military response of some kind though such a move could easily escalate into a global thermonuclear war.

Franco-Soviet Covert Aggression

The Franco-Soviet alliance is clearly engaged in what can be nothing short of a covert war against the diminishing NATO Alliance. Following the assassination of Chancellor Kohl back in August, the Soviet Union has now sponsored a coup d'état in Italy with the K.G.B. enticing the Italian Communist Party to lead a march on the capital city of Rome. This move was a complete success with Silvio Berlusconi and his pro-NATO government being overthrown and the Italian Communist Party seizing power with Achille Occhetto as the new head of state. With Italy now Communist, the Soviet Union and France now have a land connection. As French and Soviet troops prepared to arrive in Italy, the U.S. withdrew its own forces from the country with Pope John Paul II and a number of important Catholic leaders accompanying them due to a pro-communist mob storming the Vatican - the Pope only survived due to the Corps of Gendarmerie as well as U.S. Army Rangers fighting gallantly to save his life. An exact location for an alternate Holy See site has yet to be determined however a number of Catholic Churches and Schools in the United States and other friendly nations have offered to host their exiled Pontiff. To make matters worse, the French Directorate-General for External Security (DGSE) assassinated British Prime Minister John Major resulting in London going into full lockdown. Emergency elections are due to be held with the Conservatives even calling for former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, aka the Iron Lady, to return to her leadership position. War hawks in both major U.S. political parties who are gaining more prominence everyday are now calling on President Bush to formally announce that the United States was already at war with the Soviet Union and France.

American Occupation of Zaire

In order to counter the ongoing Soviet takeover of Africa, the United States began a military invasion and occupation of the Republic of Zaire which gained us an additional 5% of the world's strategic metals. The invasion was also carried out in response to a near-miss where rebel forces loyal to Laurent-Désiré Kabila attempted to assassinate Zairean President Mobutu Sese Seko - had they succeeded they could very have brought Zaire into the Soviet camp especially seeing that Kabila is a known Marxist. First the C.I.A. attempted to stage a coup in a last-ditch attempt to avoid war but it failed. The invasion turned out to be very easy with the Zairean government surrendering within only 9 hours upon demand from the U.S.. France is now in a state of limited war due to the combination of the American led invasion of Zaire which was adjacent to the Central African Republic where they had troops and the earlier invasion of Puerto Rico from Venezuela. As a result France is no longer the most peaceful place on the planet and could soon be in a state of total war like the Soviet Union. The American occupation of Zaire also marks the first time the United States has taken offensive military action with all previous wars being defensive. Zairean President Mobutu Sese Seko was captured by U.S. Marines as he attempted to flee the country. Théodore Sindikubwabo, the would-be Interim President of Rwanda, who hid out in Zaire was also arrested by U.S. Army Rangers and Rwandan soldiers and extradited back to Rwanda to stand trial for attempting to spark a genocide there back in '94.

Communist World 1996

The start of 1996 has been marked by the Cold War entering into a new stage with Soviet-led Communism officially becoming the #1 ideology in the world with Democratic Capitalism being reduced to 2nd place. Furthermore, all Developing Capitalist States have left the U.S.A. World Team Alliance and are now rated as competition as American charisma continues to fall - uncertain if this means that nations like South Korea are now on friendly terms with Russia but they are definitely now non-aligned. Even among the Democratic Capitalist nations, human rights continues to fall due to covert operations harming their ethics not to mention a number of successful Soviet and French assassination in U.S. allied countries. Even with the United States increasing military spending to account for half the overall budget at the cost of a temporary spending deficit, the Soviet Union remains the top military power in the world. With Brazil becoming a nuclear power and France allied with Russia, the United States is now working to raise up more nuclear allies beginning with Germany which has now amended its constitution with our blessing to increase their military and nuclear power. Soviets oppose this move as the start of a Fourth Reich and has helped their ally Yugoslavia start a nuclear program of their own.

Apartheid in South Africa came to an abrupt end with the South African Communist Party seizing power which while good for some is very bad for the United States because now more then three-quarters of the world's strategic metals are controlled by the overgrowing Soviet Bloc. The Soviet Union also has the second highest oil reserves with Saddam Hussein holding first place in that field - fortunately he is now on friendly terms with the United States probably a side effect of Democratic Capitalism becoming second best. In any case the United States may grant Iraq and their landholdings Most Favored Nation status to offset our new deficit.

The World Peace Level indicates that we are currently at the brink of World War Three and the War/Peace Levels map very painfully verifies this with the Soviet Union and France in a state of total war while the United States, United Kingdom, and Germany are all in low conflict. Military recruitment in the United States has increased further. Also the American Christian parachurch organization known as "Teen Mania Ministries" has received official funding from the United States federal government. While initially meant for working on domestic and overseas mission trips, the group has now shifted its focus towards becoming a full-blown militaristic organization training America's youth to fight a "Holy War" against the evils of Atheistic Communism and Fundamental Islam. The Soviet Politburo criticized the move with Yanayev himself accusing the United States of taking the path towards becoming a Theocracy no better then any of the Fundamental Islamic countries of the Middle East.

Early 1996 Cold War Actions

Early 1996 is already proving a very trying time for the United States. The Soviet Union has sponsored a successful coup in Democratic Socialist Sweden forcing them to switch to Communist and to join the Soviet World Team Alliance. Finland is now in a precarious position not only being the last social democracy remaining but also surrounded on multiple sides. While our new deficit is shrinking rapidly, we ended up getting set back a month when Mexico decided to embargo our country much to our frustration. And we even got a boost in ambition. There has also been a low level conflict between China and India though not quite as intense as the one from a few years back just a failed Chinese surgical strike followed by mostly failed Indian economic sabotages against China. A ground war is seen as extremely unlikely.

Red India and American Aggression

India and China have been in a covert war for the past couple months. The United States attempted to calm things down via military and nuclear disarmament talks however both parties refused to listen. Not only that India decided to condemn America for both attempts which led to them doing the same. This unfortunately led to India hitting us with two sabotage attempts - both failed but that's beside the point. The fact is our attempt to bring about peace instead led to our being dragged into India's covert rampage. America sold arms to Indian rebels in response and they reciprocate with two assassination attempts which causes us to attempt to sabotage their economy which causes two surgical strike attempts which led to a full trade embargo which set us back three months in getting out of our deficit. However this is the least of our worries. The People's Republic of China scored a major victory in the little covert war with India by successfully couping them into the People's Republic of India so yet another major communist country to contend. And it seems the United States itself is no longer playing nice as our increasing ambition has caused our country to become regional terrorist concern and this was apparently the case since the start of 1996 I just didn't notice. Guess that's one side effect from having higher ambition. I could try to bring down ambition however since the Communists are obviously winning the Cold War for the moment...
