Start of 1997 - Soviet Union Currently Winning The War

We have reached the beginning of 1997. We are still at war with the Soviet Union which now practically dominates the world with Communism now accounting for more then half the world's countries currently 80 out of 168 which gives them a majority vote in the United Nations General Assembly though still short of the two-thirds vote for major policy changes. Regardless there is no denying that the Soviet Union is winning the war and is even ranked as the "Winning World Coalition. China for the first time has finally chosen to ally itself not only with the Soviet Union and France but with India as well creating a very odd coalition. Most attempts to strike back at the Soviet Union has failed which has degraded U.S. leadership effectiveness while increasing theirs. On the plus side the radioactive fallout from the Soviet nuclear strike on the United States and vice versa have significantly reduced HOWEVER radioactive fallout is now shifting to random locations around the globe though it is fortunately light so any damage is minimal. Also the United States has managed to prevent Suez Canal from falling into enemy hands by helping Israel to occupy Fundamental Islamic Egypt as well as Sudan to secure their southern flank. As a result Kenya has been liberated. Furthermore Zionism has now been included in the Top 6 ideologies. Lebanon and Syria may be Israel's next target though taking Lebanon will be easier said than done since their relatively positive sentiment means that the Secretary of Defense will resign if we invade. If Israel is to take Lebanon they must do so on their own. At the moment however we must focus on the defense of our remaining European allies especially Germany which is practically surrounded. Germany is now the path towards becoming a nuclear power with the Germans having detonated their first test bomb. The United Kingdom is also at risk due to France expanding their military to outnumber the British 4 to 1. The Hong Kong Handover due July 1, 1997 is fast approaching though it is very unlikely the British will cede their last major overseas holding until after the war is over and possibly not even then. If China invades, the Soviet Union and ironically India may help them which would be very bad for the Commonwealth.

I think I can do this. This is one ideal spot to setup a scenario though I may also do another for the Millennium. Odds are that Russia and the United States will still be at war with more nuke strikes possible.

World War III Update: Enemy Ground Offensives & Betrayal

The Third World War entered a new stage in February 1997 with the enemy staging their first major ground invasions of the conflict. Centralist Indonesia launched a full-scale invasion of Australia on February 12th - New Zealand and eventually the United States joined in on the  defense of Australia though the Indonesians clearly have the upper hand. With more then one million Soviet WTA troops on our southern border, we are unable to go all in in defending our ally. And as if that wasn't enough, the Soviet Union sponsored a successful coup in South Korea bringing them onto their side and my attempt to coup them back to my side failed. On February 16th, South Korea accompanied by the Soviet Union launched a full-scale military invasion of Japan with South Korean forces landing on Kyushu and Soviet forces on Hokkaido. A number of strikes were also carried out on civilian and military sites on Honshu. American and Taiwanese troops immediately joined with Japanese Self-Defense Forces and engaged the enemy. News from both major battlefronts are grim with the United States and their allies sustaining heavy casualties with more then one hundred thousand dead while enemy casualties only number a few thousand. The most daunting reality here is the fact that South Korea, which was supposed to provide the bulk of ground forces in defense of Japan until US reinforcements could arrive, had instead joined with our mortal enemies in attacking Japan after having already left our alliance since the start of '96. Projections now reveal a very likely possibility Australia and Japan will fall which would prolong the conflict even further unless of course we surrendered to the Soviet Union which is NOT an option. All ceasefire talks have broken down and there is now a mounting fear that escalation towards further nuclear conflict may be inevitable.

Anyone ever managed this before? After some weird things happened while trying to play Resource Wars (France apparently nuked me, but there was no notification this had happened), I ended up in a full on nuclear exchange with France, China, Iraq, the USSR and the UK.

Dark Days Of World War Three

The Third World War is going very badly for the United States. Within days of the start of the invasion of Japan, the Soviets had taken Hokkaido and the South Koreans had taken Kyushu. Additionally Soviet forces invaded the main Japanese island of Honshu while the South Koreans moved on Shikoku.  We deployed additional U.S. forces to the defense of Japan as quickly as possible but unfortunately our losses caused our troops' will to fight to decrease faster then we could recover it. The arrival of additional U.S. troops managed to stave off defeat however the bulk of the Red Army was taking part in the attack giving the Russians vast numerical superiority. Within under two weeks, U.S. forces sustained three times as many casualties as we had done in the entire Vietnam War. The Soviet Union inevitably won the Battle of Japan and, only days earlier, Indonesia won the Battle of Australia. So very dark time for us. As the Soviet Union occupied Japan, all remaining American forces retreated to Okinawa and had begun the withdrawal back to the United States which is currently vulnerable to a potential Soviet attack. U.S. Marines were able to extract the Japanese Imperial Family thereby saving them from certain death. It was believed that they would setup a government/throne-in-exile in Little Tokyo, Los Angeles but unfortunately rampant crime and gang violence which worsened with the nuke strike in November makes such a move unlikely unless the military and the police could put an end to the violence. U.S. leadership effectiveness has now dropped to 0% which is very very bad as it is now all but impossible for our government to get anything done. Surgical strikes have no chance to succeed for example. The only way to restore our leadership at this point will be to win a few victories on the ground. Obviously we have no chance in defeating the Soviet Union in an outright brawl even if we could deploy all my forces to Iceland which we can't. France may be doable but probably too high risk. So we will have to select some isolated countries to target such as helping Israel to take Syria to establish another buffer zone for the State of Israel and/or re-establishing the American Commonwealth of the Philippines as a means to counter increasing Soviet dominance in the region.

Oh believe me it could've been worse. The Soviet Union attempted to stage a coup in the United States but failed very fortunately. In fact here's an alternate saved game I made in which that coup actually succeeded!

1997 United States coup d’etat

It is a dark day for the United States of America. On the morning of February 18th, 1997, the Committee for State Security of the Soviet Union won a major victory through the successful sponsorship of a coup in the United States. As a result the Communist Party U.S.A. has seized power in Washington with U.S. President Chuck Baldwin being summarily removed from office by the New Congress. The ex-president was subsequently arrested American People's Bureau of Investigation (A.P.B.I) which was a post-coup rebrand of the F.B.I. and is expected to be extradited to Moscow where he would stand trial and potentially face a very public execution. Gus Hall, the General Secretary of the Communist Party U.S.A., was installed as the new President of the United Socialist States of America and has promised to maintain the American dream while at the same time bringing America to its rightful place among the United Socialist Nations of the World. President Hall ordered U.S. forces to immediately stand down effectively abandoning Japan and probably the remainder of the Free World to Soviet occupation. The new People's Government of America has also agreed to reduce military spending and manpower by at least 75% and to allow the deployment of Soviet and Soviet-allied troops to U.S. soil with unrestricted immunity to given to them. The coup has all but ensured that victory in the Third World War aka Second Great Patriotic War officially goes to the Soviet Union.

Early 1997 Wartime Covert Operations

We have gotten through March and made it to the start of April 1997. The Soviet Union continues to strengthen its position with more and more countries falling to Soviet-sponsored coups. Even Centralist Indonesia which was technically neutral in the Third World War and only joined in briefly to occupy Australia wasn't immune to the ongoing Soviet Storm with a successful coup bringing both the Indonesians and their new Australian vassals into the Soviet Bloc. The Soviet Union has also successfully couped Canada thereby eliminating our only remaining ally that would've stood with us against an invasion. And there's a fair chance that invasion is coming sooner rather then later if the C.I.A.'s latest report is any indication. The United States has had a number of successes in resisting covert attacks by our enemies then staged a number of counter-ops against them. Unfortunately despite multiple successes, U.S. leadership effectiveness amazingly remains at 0% which seems to indicate that the only way to restore our leadership is to actually score victories in ground conflicts. Unfortunately we can't spare significant forces overseas due to an impending Soviet attack on our country. Hopefully keeping a sizable garrison at home will delay such an invasion. Small isolated countries are our best bet such as Syria. Philippines is another if restoring our Commonwealth there is beneficial.
