Military not properly equipping gear
« on: September 16, 2023, 09:59:46 am »

:'( I'm currently experiencing an issue where my military squad won't put on all the gear that is assigned and available to them. Which in this case is a very minimalistic set of individually chosen weapons, armor, and leggings. As you can see from this screenshot, most of them are properly geared, but there are always several that don't seem to find what they need. My stocks have more than enough equipment, so I don't understand why they can't find it. And what's with the yellow icons? They seem to stay yellow, too.

I've tried disbanding / recreating the squad, toggling wear over / replace civilian clothes, changing the settings of the uniform, and clicking that "update equipment" button whenever it was available to be clicked (what does this button do exactly?), to no effect. The squad always seems to get their equipment into some configuration of not-all-there, with a mix of red and yellow icons. I've also tried putting armor stands and weapon racks in their barracks, but they don't even seem to use them. Am I missing something here or is this some sort of bug?

UPDATE:

I figured out why some of the stuff was yellow. It was because a couple of the soldiers were in the hospital, waiting to be sutured, but I didn't have any thread at the time so they just kept waiting there and not picking up their equipment, which resulted in yellow icons.

Something else I noticed was that the soldiers who had red icons were already wearing armor that was part of their civilian outfit. I tried giving them an outfit that replaced civilian clothes, but then they just didn't wear any armor at all.

After a bunch of fiddling I was finally able to get the buggy soldier to wear the correct armor by setting a uniform that replaced civilian clothes, requiring exact matches. For whatever reason, allowing partial matches kept resulting in them not wearing anything. Although at one point I was somehow able to get them to wear everything at once, no idea how that happened.

One other thing that's weird is that some of the soldier graphics in the squad menu don't match the actual soldiers' graphics. It shows them not wearing armor when they are, or vice versa.

But anyway, I was able to get everyone to mostly wear the proper stuff, save for one soldier who for some reason won't pick up their crossbow bolts (it's still a yellow icon).

Military uniform assignment is pretty buggy.

Yellow means that something in that category has been assigned to the soldier, but the soldier hasn't picked it up, yet.  Red means that nothing is available to assign to them.  I frequently run into a problem whereby the same item gets assigned to two different dwarfs.  Dwarf the second doesn't get what they were assigned.  When its traceable to named items, its always dwarfs in different squads that are claiming the same item.

I usually just assign specific pieces of armor to each military dwarf. I've found that it very rarely leads to any equipping problems and if it does, it's usually easy to fix. (This in 0.47.05, haven't tried military in Steam.)

You need to add and equip one dwarf at a time to prevent that. If you make an entire squad at once, there will be conflicts.

That's what I used to do but unfortunately it is not currently possible in the Premium version because the gear list does not hide items already equipped to other dwarfs or show them with a special asterisk or something. Hence if you have multiple items with the same names, you end up playing a game of hot potato instead of assigning gear.

Whelp. That's a bummer. Wonder why that's been changed? :/

It always worked like that.

Incomplete armor sets are common on 'metal armor' uniform because of the "armor goes over clothing" setting by default doesn't make them take off their gloves or shoes. General material allocation is better for less overlaps, as is keeping armor/weapons out of bins so barracks assigned equipment doesn't get mixed up.

Helmet - Replaces hat
Breastplate/mail -  Replaces coats
Gloves - Not replaced
Greaves - Added over the top of trousers
Chain trousers (foreign) - not replacing trousers
Leather Trousers -> Leather leggings, will be replaced.
Shoes - Not Replaced for high or low shoes

If you have a complete set, ideally switch to individually assign 'uniform replaces clothes', or name and save a new metal uniform.

Another way of looking at it, is that if dwarves had metal civilian shoes and gloves natively, they would be able to swap seamlessly into metal uniforms.

Sorry, I worded my post wrongly. Before Premium, the gear list showed an item to be assigned to some other dorf but the Premium version currently does not do that. Hence, it is almost impossible to track which weapon/armour piece have already been assigned and the player ends up assigning the same steel helmet to multiple dwarves in a squad.
