Yeah, I've been tempted to restart too now that I understand skills. I wish I understood more about how a given skill maps to a given attribute when slotting. Because it makes no sense. I've got one Phost and despite trying to slot skills into that section of three, I haven't gotten another Phost stat upgrade out of it. Even using something that has Lantern in it. Very confused.

Whoo boy that was fun watching 4 lessons just turn into smoke. Really could do without that part. I get why but it's still kind of annoying.

Truth is though you should probably have one of each skill learned, bar nothing.

I tried to remove an infestation from a book and it didn't work?

I did it at a desk, using a Lantern skill that works against infestations. I needed 7 winter, which I provided with my soul, a memory and some ink. It had me craft refulgin. Upon completion, the book was returned to me, still infested. Do I actually need to research the book with enough aspect, the amount of aspect that removes the infestation, AND use a skill that's good against infestation and meets the aspect criteria of the desk?

It's possible the book has to be mastered first. The one book that hasn't been already mastered before I tried cleansing at a desk gave me similar issues.
When you'll have the setup right the name of the process will change to something like 'Dewulf's (or whomever) method'.
I don't think it's possible to read and cleanse at the same time, so try to use a soul fragment the book won't corrupt, if possible. Like health instead of chor for heart. You know the drift.

You definitely do not need to have read a book to cleanse it; every cleansing I have attempted so far has been on an unread book and has succeeded. (I may be somewhat paranoid as all my books with... unwanted additions... are in their own little quarantine room until I've dealt with them)

If the skill is noting that you will craft something, double check that you definitely have the correct type of skill, and the correct aspect for the cleansing. If you have the right skill type, and the correct aspect in sufficient amount, then I would suggest a bug report; the more specific recipe should take precedence.

Some of the infestation types do have cleansing results which may be of use to keep some infected books around, depending on how useful those outcomes are.

Well I performed the operation and got my Soul maladied. I dunno, I re-checked my aspects several times. But the fact the title should change and didn't tells me I did something wrong. It was an Edge book, using a Lantern Skill for the cleansing, using a Winter Soul and Memory. I feel? like I did it correct but I'll have to run some more tests.

Did you provide the correct element of the soul? Different colours of infestations need different souls (it tells you which when you hover over the infestation). Theoplasma on my wintry books was Chionic, and needed heart. On the lantern one it was Actinic and needed forge. This necessitated a change of desks and cleansing skills.
Now I think of it, that one cleansing failure I mentioned might have been me trying to use the same skill as before, with the same soul, rather than anything to do with not having read the book first.

Whilst I'm not sure if I've found all the skills yet (125 books in), I've checked the skills I have that are effective against Infestations and none of them have Lantern; presuming that the infestation is Witchworms, which require 7 Winter and a skill that can cleanse Infestations. The cleansing skills I have that are Lantern-aspected are effective against Curses and Corruptions (and are more likely to be missing from my collection as I have fewer skills to deal with those than Infestations). Both of those skills produce Refulgin as their Prentice-level recipe with Lantern.

As noted, if it was definitely the correct skill type, this may be a bug - but double-check that everything is correct.

I'll check when I get home. It's possible I misread it but I SWEAR that Lantern right I had was effective against Infestations. If not I'll feel pretty stupid.

I think that's also maybe one of the frustrating parts of the game. From the Workstations that upgrade Skills to the Workstations that actually do something specific, how you get these things has everything to do with how you unlock the House. So I'm like....50 hours in and I just found a Writing Desk that will handle Busk.

It's a shame the rooms aren't semi-randomly populated. I get why, the structure of Hush House and its rooms are part of the narrative. But it does make for some moments where you feel stuck simply because you haven't unlocked the right thing yet. Partly why I'm glad there's no real doomclock or upkeep.

I will say though that

you get a stat and corresponding skill at 3 because you can start crafting basic stuff with no consumable inputs. Which means you can start making Memories and/or consumables on demand to push for tougher research/higher tier rooms without waiting on the right weather condition to provide the juice you need.

Eh. Weather is a bonus. Have you tried talking to your "hired" helpers/friends?

As someone who recently demoed walls for a friend at a new house they're renovating, and got pizza and a soda out of it, it's dead on. And fun. But years worth of doing it, every weekend? Maybe not so much

Latest update seems to have added a button for selecting completed tasks. Very handy.
