You arrange Bryne to meet without you outside the pavilion. A whispered spell gives his eyes the ability to see your mark (and other things besides). You tell him to take the mark alive. He nods his understanding.
The rest of the party was uneventful but productive as you expanded your contacts with the spymasters of the realm. Baron Helmoth soon leaves, Alice not long and so for a short time you enjoy being the center of attention again. You notice Alba leave, your mark shining on his arm.
You return to your lodgings, unsurprised to see a bruised and bound, potentially traitorous, spymaster before you. Bryne explains there wasn’t too much trouble, took a couple of strong reliable guards and jumped the spymaster. Attracted a little notice with the shouts, but they made good time through the alleys back to Prince Richard’s camp.
Now, you are nowhere near as good as the Extractor, but you have a few tricks up your slieve to compel information out of people. A couple spells, and Alba is admitting to passing on information to the neighing kingdom Vestfold, but he’s known as an information broker. He sells information to everybody. He would have sold your membership in the Order Obscura too for the right price.
You ask why Alice would have sold him out to you, and you see him hang up a bit. After a momentary struggle he relents, and shares his secret.
The King has a bastard son. His firstborn, the fruits of a campaign in the king’s younger days. His name is Hector, a blacksmith and a leader on the town of Halisburg’s council. The King has kept it a secret for all these years, keeping his unclaimed son under watch for protection.
Alba had paid for this information, brought to him by one his contacts, an Elis of Wearstown. No idea where she had got the info, but he was able to confirm it. The spymaster was then going to sell the information to Vestfold for probably a staggering amount of gold.
Well, shit.
Prince Richard was not the only son of the King, of course, there was his younger brother Martin in the clergy. But if some rival power or a group of nobles wanted to foist a figurehead, they could claim that this Hector should be the true heir as the Kings firstborn. It could lead to a devastating civil war.
If that information ever got out, of course. Alice either found out or suspected that Alba here knew of the kings bastard son, and sent you to clean up, not suspecting you would…
Shit.
What would King’s Spymistress do if she suspected that you had this information as well?
You look at the halpless Alba. What do you do?
A. Keep him here for now, under guard.
B. Send him with Bryne back to Farona.
C. It’s gotten too hot. Kill him and dump his body in the street.
D. Make him forget the last couple days and send him back out on the street.
