B, The Extractor
+1

Extraction is probably more useful than murder, yes?
+1

It takes a few weeks but you get a grip on the court. Your arrival set off a flurry of messages from the castle, and a few wards set in the right places caught a few sneaks. Helping massively were a handful of tattletales trying to gain the favor of the new spymaster.

You politely hear them out, then invite them to tell their stories to your associate. The Extractor bundles out, a warm smile on his grandfatherly face. The would be informant is already dazed by his magic, and in minutes the Extractor will have taken everything of import from their mind. Not that they would remember that.

You try not to look too closely at the Extractor, and never in the eye. He reassured you he would never rifle through your mind, but you wouldn’t want to push it. He insists that he must never be seen by someone who wears a chorae. You are not quite brave enough to ask why.

Digesting this information takes time, but it does lead a rather big fish on the Council. You have also been checking on them as well.

The Steward, Darren, appears to be rather steeped in corruption. He has been embezzling funds, and selling secrets and info to Duke Harkon. You have a pair of guards grab the Steward’s aide to get more proof. While not exactly the most discrete, with the you now have enough evidence to discredit the steward. You also have the location of the Harkon’s handlers, but you have to get a move on them quickly before word spreads you’re snatching people.

What do you do with the Steward?
A. To the Prince! Boosts his trust in you, increases his suspicions of the Harkons. Increases distrust of other councilors towards you.

B. Turn the Steward.
With your large amount of evidence (and perhaps just a touch of magical influence) the steward becomes yours, giving you more influence on the council.

And as for the Harkon agents holed up outside town?

C. Send the guards in. Loud and indiscreet, but if you want them taken care this is the simplest choice.

D. Put a magical tracker on them.
Allows you to keep tabs on them, but leaves them free to cause trouble.

E. Leave them be for now.

Spymaster: You!

Wife: None. A lot of interest but nothing concrete has developed yet.

Darn, we should have been female. :p

B, D - We get to quietly screw over the prince's enemies, and keep track of the rest of their men without causing a scandal.

Gaining some trust from our boss seems more important right now.

Our boss already trusts us, or we wouldn't have the job in the first place.

A would be a good starting point to show our usefulness to the prince, but on the other hand I’m curious about this duke Harkon, and B will give us more leverage.
So B D

With A, the prince would support us going after Harkon, so A D is the best choice for that. :p

Steward Darren is left pale and trembling by the mountain of evidence you have of his misdeeds. You thread your voice with magic as you demand his obedience, that if he wished to keep his life he would follow your every word.

Fearfully he asks of the Harkons and what they will do when they discover his betrayal. You narrow your eyes and ask why they would know? You tell him that he will continue to provide the Harkons with information you approve of them knowing.

And also-
A. Take some of his embezzled money for yourself. Can be used to purchase improvements or perhaps hire better agents.

B. Lure the Harkon agents into a trap with the Extractor.

C. Something else?

D. Nothing at this time.  (Note can pick multiple options.)

You have your apprentice lay the tracking spell over one of the Harkon agents. They react as you’d expect, fleeing the city as soon as word spread to them of your crackdown. Soon, however, they reached out to Darren the steward, who reassured them that you had not discovered them and that your purge was complete. Veteran operators, they made other inquires, but returned to the city, under your careful watch.

The Harkons. The Duke Harkon is widely considered the most powerful man in the kingdom, only subordinate to the king himself. Somesay he threatened rebellion unless his son was to be married to the Princess Lenora, heir to the throne. In any case, his future grandchildren are set to inherit the throne, And thus, Prince Richard is perhaps the Duke’s greatest threat to the ascendancy of his dynasty.

They will have to be dealt with eventually.

But with your house secured at the moment, it’s time to decide how to prepare for success in the future.

Do you:

A. Head to the Capital: Prince Richard’s future lies here. Relocate your operations here a few months early to prepare the way.

B. Recruit an Agent: Leverage your contacts to bring in new operatives or agents.

C. Set a scheme in motion. A bit early, but you can begin laying the ground work for some scheming.

D. Contact the Order. Get access to high tier agents and resources, but will come with a cost in favors.

E. Something else?

The prince will not appreciate if he discovers we embezzle funds, at least luring the Harkon agents is more ambiguous if we get caught,

B and A!
