I was inspired by this cautionary tale not to run this game, to run this game.

The rules of the game are simple:
pick a grid coordinate and a color. put your tank there (feel free to copy the icon in the bottom right, or make your own. There should be no doubt what color the icon is).
You start with 3 HP, 3 range and no AP.
Once 10 players (an arbitrary number- we can increase or decrease based on interest) join the game begins.
Each player earns 1 Action Point at midnight GMT.
With this action point they can:

• Move 1 space laterally (up, down, left or right)
• Shoot another tank, decrementing its HP by one, if the Manhattan distance between them is equal or less that their range.
• upgrade their range by one
• transfer it to another tank within range

There is no limit to how many AP a player/tank can have.
Finally, each day the eliminated players may vote for their favorite tank still in the game- whoever it is gains 1 additional AP at midnight. In case of ties, no one gets the bonus.
If your HP is reduced to 0 you are out of the game and all your AP are lost.
Last tank standing wins the game.

I was kinda hoping people would update the game-state themselves.

Don't have access to ms paint.  Tried GIMP.  Could copy tank from one place to another using rectangle select -> Copy -> rectangle select -> paste into selection.  Tried to erase previous tank with bucket fill.  That didn't work.  Tried to use rectangle select on a white square -> Copy -> rectangle select on the old tank square -> paste into selection.  That didn't work.  Tried reverting back to the beginning and then using rectangle select -> Cut -> rectangle select -> paste into selection.  That moved the tank but left a transparent (i.e.  non-white) void where the tank originally was...

If you're not already very proficient in it, GIMP is too complex for what you need. Paint isn't the only simple image editor. Depending on your operating system, there's kolourpaint on Ubuntu, Paintbrush on mac. If you somehow have a windows machine without Paint, then you can download it from here.

If you can't or don't want to download a program, you can use JS Paint directly in your browser.

Having an easy image editor is invaluable for playing and running forum games.

Ok.  I've instatlled Kolourpaint and this is what I've been able to do so far:

This include:

• Ability to copy a square containing a tank and paste it onto another square.
• Ability to copy an empty square onto a square with a tank (thereby erasing the tank).
• Ability to change the direction a tank is facing.
• Ability to change the color of a tank.

Great stuff! Looks like you've got all the skills and tools to update the game state in this game, and it'll serve you in good stead in future games as well.

You can definitely do that with Kolourpaint.
