Unfortunately, you only have 43 gold to bet at current, having won 43☼ in your round 2 bet and lost 100☼ in round 3. Priest Ndrog was a clear favourite among bettors in match 2N (249☼ from 3 bettors against 57☼ from 1), so the payout was relatively low.

I gotta say the matches before my next one have been ones where I felt the odds were stacked in my favour. The beast however has an unconventional build and strengths that make it very dangerous. If I was a betting armadillo man, I might consider betting against myself.

Oh dear. Well, the Committee bets the rest of their gold on Logem anyway. Also, I wouldn't bet against you, Stimraug. Your fighter has overcome serious odds just to get this far, and I've seen far stranger things than an armadillo man besting a minotaur.

The Quarter Finals

Ren was lost. There were two reasons for this. First, when Knifin’ Around qualified to the quarter finals they had been given new chambers. Second, Ren was a bit drunk.

The chambers were a significant improvement from where they had been staying. First of all, they had separate sleeping quarters. They also had a dining room with a table and a chair. Best of all Ren had an actual office with a second chair!
Knifin’ Around had fans. Wherever she went there were persons emitting shrill whistles for her attention. They called themselves the whistle pigs. Or, maybe the fans of other champions called them that. The important thing was she had fans.
The quality of the food and drink had improved. Knifin’ Around dined on fresh berries and melon. Ren was brought, due to some confusion about human cuisine, bowls of cotton and jute fibers. Fortunately, she was able to trade the fibers at the market for real food and for dwarven ale.

Dwarven ale packs a punch for a human. That’s why she found herself in an unfamiliar hallway. The floor was as smooth as glass. There was a workshop bustling with dwarvish craftsman.

“Hello, could you direct me to - is that Horof Dreadfoot?”

A large sketch of the minotaur champion dominated the wall. It was a mosaic of five panels. It was three panels high and two panels wide. The lower left panel was missing. You could see the initial cuts of engraving tools in the stone. The minotaur’s mouth was open as if he was bellowing. He is frozen in mid swing, the enormous great axe bearing down on the missing panel.
A dwarf walked up holding a scroll. “Yes. This is the practice piece for match 2 of the quarter finals. It goes with that one over there.” He pointed to a single panel. It featured a marmot woman with her back to the viewer. She appeared to be recoiling. She held a tiny dagger up as if to ward off a blow.
“We really wanted to focus on the scale with this battle,” said the engraver, “Let’s the audience see the futility.”

Ren felt the buzz from the ale fading. “Why is this a practice piece?”
“Because we’re practicing the scene on cheap material. When the champion wins the tournament we’ll be carving this in the hall of legends,” The dwarf replied.
“Do you know who’s going to win?”
“Only Armok knows that,” said the dwarf.


Ren shut the door of her office and collapsed into her chair.
Why was she so worried?

Knifin’ Around has fought bigger opponents and won. Granted, at most, they were twice her size. A minotaur is only five - five and a half times bigger. No worries.

Knifin’ Around has fought fully armored opponents and won.  Horof doesn’t even have any armor. He’s practically naked … Naked holding a two handed Great Axe. An axe that’s taller than me.

A bronze axe, ha! Knifin’ Around has an adamantine dagger! The most wicked material of any weapon. Adamantine is unstoppable. It can cut through anything. Who cares if a dagger is the size of a toothpick to a minotaur? All trees are felled at ground level, right?

If she can hit him. For a large person, Horof is weirdly light on his feet - er hooves.

 Maybe it’s a good time to bring up some training. There’s a training floor for the champions. Wait! We could visit one of the private gyms. They are discrete. Also no one will know our game plan if we go there. I can fix this!

Ren jumped to her feet. “Hey,” she said loudly to announce herself as she rushed to Knifin’ Around’s chamber, “What do you think about hitting the training ground? Polish up your skills? Maybe we could visit the armory? See what they have? Try something new? Or -” her voice died in her throat.

The room was dark. Knifin’ Around was sitting on the floor with her back to Ren.

In her hand was the blue dagger, held up in the air.

 Knifin’ Around tilted the blade, catching the light with a flash.

Ren saw the marmot woman’s eyes reflected in the metal. They were feverish and wide.

They floated in the black space. Like a ghost.

“W-what do you think?” Ren found herself afraid to look away.

“I’m a knife.”

She had spoken in perfect dwarvish.

“Knifin’ Around?”

The champion clicked her teeth together in laughter.

A fully-healed Ine inspects the spartan, yet much cleaner room Meng has led him to, away from the alleyways he was previously holed up in. 

"Thank you Meng, I hope this means that your family has forgiven you about the difficulties with the Arena administrators."

Meng, still clutching his carryall reflexively, looks over his shoulder.  An uncle, or perhaps an auntie gremlin, is keeping watch on Meng from the hallway. 

"Yessss, yes." Meng looks back at Ine, trying to ignore the toothful grimace from his relative.  "Family happy with win.  Meng double-check rules for this round, make sure know what allowed."

Ine nods to himself, picks up his now-repaired training gear, including his steel sword.  "Good, let's go to those new facilities you were talking about."

Meng was thruthful...ish.  The new space _is_ larger, cleaner and free of alleyway debris.  However, Ine suspects that the large room was previously a warehouse for grain, as the number of felines chasing cave vermin is high.  However, it is enough for Ine, as there are newly built training dummies, an obstacle course, and a somewhat concerningly large queue of gremlins eager to trial their skills against Ine in a line at the back.

Ine paws at the ground.  He won't show any fear to non-Herd, but he knows each successive round has been harder won.  There are only three battles remaining, can he endure the next?

"Glory must be earned, let us begin!" shouts Ine, striking a martial pose.
