A visibly drunk group of dwarves, tankards in their hands, reels to the bookie's office. The drunkest of them steps forward and bellows:

"Ssevenshy bucksh on that chubby rat in the pww.. prrhe.. the pwriesht robe...!"

He gestures roughly towards the elegant and ernest figure of Cupuaçu while he sprays out 70☼ over the table, about half of which lands on the other side with a metallic jingle.

"Ouur shhweet little boy loves'em chunky, huahaha-*beeelch*"

They do not seem to have noticed that they will probably not meet in battle unless both reach the semi-final.

"How has the tournament been going for you so far?"

"I have scourge-whipped the elf, successfully motivating her to NOT CUT OFF ANY MORE PARTS. Also to die." zeps says this while brushing the matted fur pressed around the bandage on his tail.

"I see. And, I notice that you don't have combat expertise, yet managed your weapon with some skill. Where have you learned such skills?"

"Well, after I got my MRA (Masters of Rat Administration), I had  some 'on the job training', encourage-motivating the 'rators that work under me, and periodically avoiding the encouragement they slung back at me. Followed by perma-banishing them from the warren."

"That does sound like, uh, quite the training regiment. Do you have any concerns about your upcoming fight against Madame Spots? She had, I believe, one of the fastest take-downs we've seen in the arena! Does that intimidate you?"

"Nah. Elf was tall fighter, which was new for me, and spears are unfair-cheating with their reach. But I beat that last round, and what's another tall-with-spear? I'll dodge it, than lash-slice up the face, then win. Fighting is easy compared to being an admin to a bunch of ungrateful slaves. Uh, I mean interns fairly paid in exposure and job experience."

"Well, you sounds confident at least. Anything to say to the fans out there?"

zeps blinks, leaning forward. "I have fans? Do they have money?"

The interviewer shuffles through some papers. "Uh, I suppose, that the Dude who bet on you is now 13 gold richer."

zeps stand up out the chair and begins to walk away. "Oh. Its just gold. Nevermind then; my warren, Dread It, has recently decommissioned gold. Now, fans, *that's* something I can leverage for personal gain!"

"'Decomissioned gold? Like, the metal?..."
"Well, doesn't look like we'll  be getting any more answers for zeps right now, but we'll see how his bout with Madame Spots goes. Maybe we'll hear more from him, provided he doesn't get a spearhole in his forehead."

Who knew what seemed a simple contest of skills would involve so much carnage...?

Spoiler: Ine's trials continue (click to show/hide)

After the initial shock of the first round, Ine is left with sore arms and a badly fragmented copper mail shirt, watching the results of the later tournament battles. He initially is still not quite sure about this 'next round' that his gremlin manager keeps chittering about is.  They shuffle off to one of the dank alleyways surrounding the arena district.  They are met by one, maybe two gremlins... it's hard to make out in the low lighting of the alleys. There is an a brief scuffle betwixt the manager and the others.  A gremlin is seen dragging off the damaged copper mail shift, muttering something dark under its breath.

Over the next several days, Ine is sequestered in a dim alcove with a rag for a door, as he heals up his arms. Once the gremlin manager is satisfied Ine has recovered enough, they slip away further into the shady halls of gremlin-town. What happens there is not wholly known, but district residents do spot Ine being run through some grueling tests. One confirmed sighting has Ine swarmed with gremlins as he tries to run an obstacle course.  Another sighting the gremlin manager is throwing pilfered kitchen cutlery at Ine.  He is seen swinging at targets and practicing with a swords-gremlin. These vignettes reassure the small cluster of gremlins, who have financially backed his manager for round two. 

Mostly however, Ine maintains his distance from the other denizens of the district, training hard. The exact scope of what he has signed up for was finally clear to him after watching the aftermath cleanup of the first round arena contestants. This is no butting of heads or feats of acrobatic prowess like in the bachelor trials, here his fate is as sealed as being permanently culled from the Herd.  There are no other impala men bucks to egg him on, so he works to visualize his triumphant return to the herd.  Glittering gold and glory for the Herd!

Lêrush Idar stalks through the lower reaches of the Coliseum, eyes roaming.  They finally fall on a hulking black bear man hunched over a anvil, a pile of scrap metal covering the ground.  Walking up to him, Lêrush quickly speaks, " not many customers this far from the entrance, smith"  " Aye, but I've not the will to move.  This is alley is my home, and it will be were I smith until my death."  the bear man doesn't look up as he speaks, but continues methodically shaping a length of black bronze.  a moment of silence is broken by a heavy coinpurse dropping onto the anvil.  "a commision, courtesy of my handler" Lêrush growls.  "I will need to wade through many more bodies if I am to fulfill my mistresses desires".  The smith opens the purse, and finally looks at Lêrush.  "Why come all this way, sir? you must have passed a dozen smiths on the way."  Lêrush's  releases a chuckle from his deep in his throat, "I have heard stories, and wish to know the truth.  If your work sees me to the next round, then I will have a commission worthy of the Arôlsarvesh" 

For bets, I will place 60 gold on Ligir Dustband to win.

James looks around nervously, staring at the reflection in his sword. The skunk-man gives his tail a nice floof, and pats the chainmail on his chest. "Feels...nostalgic." he mumbles to himself, vaguely remembering one of the flight suits he used to wear in his original timeline.

Hola to all, I thank all of those who stood by me as I entered my first match against Urist McGladiator. He was a worthy foe, and I wish the next McGladiator the best of luck in the tournament next year. Perhaps I will face you in the Championship bout!

Before the next round I would like to address my next opponent, Rasgrid Raskstafferson. It's not often one finds a person of higher status that is willing to broaden their horizons enough to see the plight of the people, and to this I tip my hat to you. I myself come from a family that is more well off then others, but we strive to a similar goal to you. Seeing that the people are protected and cared for.

It saddens me that we must meet this way, I would've loved to get a drink with you and talk about grand songs to the benefit of the people. Perhaps I can help write a song to you if I win, but not to get ahead of myself. I see the strength you have gained from your efforts and take it all too seriously, and I hope you take me just as seriously.

May the bards sing of our fight and spread your message throughout the land!

Ine's alley Training program and response to manager scandal rumors

Hello ladies and gentlemen reading our newspaper, i am urist mcreporter here to take an interview from ine exclusively on here:

+Alright so first question for you may I ask what you are doing in this strange alley?

-My manager Meng says that these uh.. rooms are what the first round contestants all reside in.
*looks around for his manager or relatives*
I don't want to seem ungrateful, but... this place is not what I pictured after achieving the first level of glory in the tournament.

+Also another question, a source wishing to be unknown said your manager betted against you, thoughts on that?

-That can't be right, Meng has helped me so much.  He got me signed up when I first came down into the city, and has been helping me find specialists to train with...  Sure, the money they require for services is a lot more than at home, but we don't have combat specialists at home.  Especially not expert gremlin fighters!

+your opinion in your fight with wagne? Nice fighting by the way

-I didn't know what to expect.  I'd never seen a bat man before, there are so many different competitors here.  Have you seen what that leechman did at the end of his battle?
*Ine paws at the ground trying avoid eye contact, then shakes his head and focuses back on the interviewer*
When I saw that crossbow, I thought for sure I was going to take a bolt to the knee.  But my gear protected me!

+right, what do you think of your next opponent, yeti about to be spaghetti, and have you studied his fighting?

-What's a yeti?  We don't have them in the savanna.   I only saw a few of the later rounds after Meng and his uncle pulled the bolts out of my arms.
*Ine shakes his head for focus*
It doesn't matter, Meng says the specialists he hired for me will help me win the next round.   The trials they have me work through all day--is it still day here, I lose track with these closed in spaces--the trials are something else, but I know I can bring glory to the Herd if I just make it through!
*Ine jumps around, pumping himself up for the work ahead to make ready for his fight*
