Is it possible to drop down from cliffs? If so, what key is it?

Posting from work without the new version:

I think you have to 'move carefully' (shift-direction?) onto the square, and then it should ask if you really want to move into open space.

It's frustrating, I can see ocean below by the mist (which is really cool), but can't get down to check it out

Damn, I'm swimming around in the ocean but I can't work out how to swim downwards, anyone know how?
