Strange mood, what do I need?
« on: June 16, 2023, 06:21:49 pm »

It's a dwarf child. He took over a stoneworkers shop.
He keeps repeating, "bars metal, stone rock, bones yes, rough color, tree life, bones yes, tree life, bones yes" about 2 sec each.
He has 2x tetrahedrite, that should take care of the, "bars metal", and 1x obsidian, that should take care of the, "stone rock".
I have been slaughtering extra animals, llamas, turkeys and such. So I have bones, but he's just sitting at the stoneworkers shop.
He likes kimberlite, bronze, and cat's eye. I have uncut gems, uncut cat's eye and raw glass clear and green. Lots of different logs. What's am I missing?
Oh and there's no burrows so he has access to everything.

Er, no it shouldn't - it means he wants metal bars, not unsmelted ores.

He likes kimberlite, bronze, and cat's eye.
Tell me - have your furnace operators ever smelted any bronze bars? And if so, do you still have any in your stockpiles? If not, try making some and see if anything happens.

Though in this case I wouldn't expect anything to happen, because normally only moody metalsmiths ask for bars of their favorite metal...

It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

The only other possibility I could think of would be maybe for the 'bones, yes' he wants shells. If you have any small ponds on the surface, could try fishing for pond turtle. Or if you have a brook/stream/etc, try for some mussels. Clean either of those at a fishery and it should give you some shells.

It's got to be the metal bars. Smelt one of those tetrahedrite ores at a smelter (build one if need be; and build a wood furnace for charcoal if you don't have one). Or make bronze bars if you have time but that's more involved.

I have 7 bronze bars in stockpile. He's a child, dabbling miner, dabbling planter.

He seemingly at random, just ran and got 14 reindeer bones, which had just been sitting there. Then he grabbed a rough pyrite. The only thing he doesn't seem to have grabbed yet is, "tree... life...". Yet I have piles of logs. 189 according to stocks.

Moody dwarfs grab things in order, so if they're hung up on only one item then they don't work farther down the list until they get the first thing they're missing. That can confuse things.

Just to be clear, if he's got everything except logs he has three stacks of bones (the 14 is one stack), metal bars (probably bronze), uncut gems and rough stone, right?

Just throwing things at the wall now, smelt any bars of metals you don't have but could. Check stock screen and unforbid everything, better a cheap artifact than none. But now I'm probably telling you stuff you know.

Your dwarf is posessed, so he may require a specific material for something. A specific tree type, a specific gem type, or a specific metal bar type.

Where did you get that idea from?

The only time dwarves ask for specific materials are:
  • Adamantine Wafers or favorite metal bars, for the primary material of a Metalworking mood
  • Adamantine Cloth or favorite category of cloth (plant fiber, silk, or yarn), for the primary material of a Clothesmaking mood
  • Favorite type of raw glass, for the primary material of a Glassmaker mood
  • Bone or Shell depending on preferences (in that order), for the primary material of a Bone Carver mood
  • A random type of Cloth, for a decoration on a non-Clothesmaking mood
  • A random type of available Glass (if you've never made any, it'll always ask for Green), for a decoration on a non-Glassmaker mood
Under no condition will a Strange Mood ever ask for a specific type of wood or a specific gem, and non-Metalworker moods will never request specific types of metal bars for decorations.

Also, the above rules apply to all types of strange moods (aside from Fell moods, which just demand a single dead Dwarf) - the only difference between Fey/Secretive/Possessed moods are the exact words the dwarf uses to ask for materials (and the fact that Possessed moods don't grant any skill boost).

Interesting... I thought that a moody dwarf would only ask for a particular type of metal bar if you had previously smelted it in your fortress...

That's also one of the criteria, but I didn't list it because I had already mentioned it earlier in the discussion.

Out of curiosity, is this only for metals or does it work for other things as well?  For example, will a clothier mood ask for yarn cloth if I've never shorn an animal before in the embark?

They'll ask for it anyway. Shells, too, even if those are unobtainable on your embark.

My experience, and the wiki. Posessed dwarves can and will ask for specific materials.

Personal experience can suggest patterns that don't actually exist, and the wiki is only as accurate as the people who edit it. That being said, I've tried my best to document the exact behavior of strange moods on the wiki (based on decompiling the game's strange mood code), but that doesn't stop other people from adding incorrect information based on incomplete observations.

That particular remark was added by an anonymous user (who had not made any other edits), and I just checked against a disassembly of version 0.50.08 and could not find any evidence of such behavior, so I removed it.
