What's up with whips?
« on: July 12, 2007, 07:24:00 pm »

I was just playing lasher and I can't see why would anyone ever chose them.
I imagined that I could probably use whip for wrestling, but even than it was useless. Can someone explain the whips to me?

I think they'll eventually be used as a weapon/tool combo. Where a spear would be used to attack an enemy at a range for damage, a whip would be used to disarm them and make them reconsider their attack... Or inflict critical damage to the unprotected eyes and hands (blinding or disarming them) Also, whips are effective at causing bleeding, so if you got a artifact metal whip or a masterpeice leather whip and get someone in their neck, if the wound was deep enough they could bleed out...
More so if there's a metal /obsidian blade on the end.

The 'tool' part would also be to activate levers from a distance, or swing across pits like Indiana Jones.

Conceivably, you could also loop the whip around someone's neck, and then shove them off a decent drop (not necessarilly lethal) they could be strangled to death.

They are very weak and are mostly useless.

they do "gore" damage.  whatever that means.  probably, they have different combat descriptions associated with them.  maybe they are more likely to bruise skin or tear out eyes or something.

they deal less damage than most weapons, but they are fairly lightweight.

see here:

mainly, i think it is just there to add flavor.  maybe the human lashers are there to motivate pesants.  or provide S&M services.  did you check to see if they had leather loin cloths?

In an older incarnation of this game, Dragslay, you could commit crimes in town by starting barfights.  If you got caught then depending on the race you'd face the dwarven hammerer, the human lasher, or an elf with a staff that did the michael fay thing.  The hammerer was by far the worst, and this was the beginning of Dwarven Justice.

A goblin lasher tore open one of my adventurer's throat with a scourge last night... and it got stuck in his throat... needless to say that adventurer didn't live much longer.

Whips are great! I mean, you have to bump them up to 900 Burn damage first, but then you can pretend that you're Simon Belmont's lost cousin Simon Lungmaggot (or whatnot) running around with your Flame Whip.

I'm not sure here, but I think maybe what gore damage is, is that it is similar to cutting damage, but less likely to sever things, and maybe causes more pain.  That way, you can have a weapon that cuts, but does not cut things off (like the whips in IVAN, which are kind of silly).

Gore damage is the same kind of damage that biting delivers. It very often results in bleeding, like slashing, but is still plenty effective versus undead or other things that can't bleed/don't care. Whips suck because they do too little of this damage for its advantages to really matter.

Well I found it's pretty fun strangling people with whips. Maybe you can wrestle with them better?
