need wrestling help.
« on: October 21, 2007, 09:20:00 am »

whenever I try to wrestle something, I seem to only be able to release holds, throw, take-down, or pinch the held area. I don't know how to do locks, I can only do grabs.

if I grab the throat, I can strangle, and I know how to gouge out eyes, but if I grab, say, a dog's right rear leg, I can only pinch or release. I tried attacking by both pressing A and choosing to attack and by moving into the enemies' square, but all that does is release a grab, or punch an (usually) unrelated area.

I'm wielding no weapons, and am a talented wrestler. how do I get into locks?

Not 100% sure on this one but I think you can only perform locks on stuff with 'humanoid joints'.

I tried to perform locks and stuff on mules before and had the same problem. Since I know my way around the raws a little I assumed it is because mules technically don't have joints.

If yer trying to train wrestling gouging out their eyes then pinching their head repeatedly seems to do the trick.

EDIT: Durn Shrek movie got me mixing up donkeys with mules.

I was able to do locks on a kobold by grabbing various areas like upper right arm and upper left arm. maybe that's the trick.

though, I remember grabbing his arm with just my right hand and proceeding to break his shoulder.

Yea it doesn't seem to care what yer using to try to perform a lock just as long as you have it.

Heck, mod in a race with wings without making a custom wing definition and they can use their wings to do all that stuff.

You need to be wrestling something that has defined joints to lock it, otherwise the program has no info to know what you're doing. Once I defined quadrupedal joints that made it so you could lock and break the joints of 4 legged critters.

Yeah, joints are just another body part type.  Right now, Toady only defined joints for most humanoids.  Joints are attached to body parts, and by convention (and logic) the joint is associated to the limb farther away from the heart -- so, for instance, to break the "ankle" you need to grab the "foot" (the foot is farther away from the heart than the ankle), to break the "knee" you need to grab the "lower leg" (the lower leg is farther from the heart than the knee), etc.

If you're looking for wrestling moves to perform against non-humanoids, grab the head and gouge their eyes.  This is very effective.

This should do it. Just don't forget to add it to all quadruped creatures.

[BODY:QUADRUPED_JOINTS]
[BP:RA_J:right front elbow][CON:RA][JOINT][SMALL][INTERNAL]

[BP:LA_J:left front elbow][CON:LA][JOINT][SMALL][INTERNAL]

[BP:RL_J:right rear elbow][CON:RL][JOINT][SMALL][INTERNAL]

[BP:LL_J:left rear elbow][CON:LL][JOINT][SMALL][INTERNAL]

[BP:RH_J:right front ankle][CON:RH][JOINT][SMALL][INTERNAL]

[BP:LH_J:left front ankle][CON:LH][JOINT][SMALL][INTERNAL]

[BP:RF_J:right rear ankle][CON:RF][JOINT][SMALL][INTERNAL]

[BP:LF_J:left rear ankle][CON:LF][JOINT][SMALL][INTERNAL]

But I haven't tested it yet. And names are probably incorrect.

It's possible to get experience solely through pinching (and actually, IIRC, you can train Armor User skill and perhaps another skill as well at the same time), but unless you're sure they won't get the chance to fight back, or know they can't really do much harm, it's not recommended.  You can even knock them unconscious purely through the art of the pinch, though you run some significant risk in doing so.

Pinching is not quite as good at raising experience or as cool as breaking all the joints and gouging eyes, though.  :) I like it anyway since it means my opponent doesn't die and I get to do it as long as I want without needing to find another opponent.
