You attempt to pivot on your heel, spinning to face your attacker. They are already mid-lunge when you swing your
boot knife in an attempt to parry their assault. Unfortunately, you are not much of a melee fighter, and the weight difference in the blades means you have minimal impact as the tip of a short sword slips between your ribs on your right. The assailant shoulder checks you and you fall onto your back, grimacing in pain and reflexively clutching your wound. Your boot knife is sticking into the sand at your feet.
You hear cries of pain as your fellow hunters are cut and jabbed by these "wolves", who keep materializing just long enough to strike before vaporizing again. When you try to sit up and reach for your boot knife, a knee appears in front of your face and strikes it with immense force. While your head flies back you catch a brief glimpse of your friends each being slowly cut down. If only one of you had gotten some sort of advantage in the fight...
A sword pierces your gut and you cry out in pain. You hear your friends succumbing to their foes as well. As consciousness fades, you hear that booming voice once again.
