They're using a very average looking knife to saw through your rope bindings.
"Good thing you always had boot knife, eh?" they quip as the last threads are sawed through.
You remember now. You and three others were hunting when a Caravlian Slaver Caravan ambushed you while making camp. The slavers handed you over to a nearby Caravlian noble who "tried" and sentenced the group of you to "provide entertainment until death". Carter is the hunter in front of you now. The other two, Talys and Hathram, are also here and alive, but busy looking upward. You decide to glance upward too. The platform is rapidly rising in a shaft clearly dug into the earth, and the ground above the rising platform begins to split open, allowing both sunlight and the roars of the crowd to cascade through. Some sand falls from the surface and dusts the group of you.
You get to your feet as Carter slaps the knife against your chest, "I believe this is yours. I don't intend on dying a thief."
"Yeah, not now that he's alive," Hathram says with a deep laugh.
"We're about to die," Talys interjects, "And you want to make jokes?"
"Of course, Tiny Talys," Hathram teases, "I want to meet my gods with a smile on my face. Surely the afterlife is depressing enough!?"
Sunlight beams across the entire platform by now. You flip the knife in your hand so that the blade is hidden by your forearm. You feel the rising platform slow and you can see the highest seats of the arena as your head begins to breach the surface. A booming voice projects throughout the coliseum.
"Presenting: The Punished! These foreign agents were caught within our borders attempting to compromise the stability of the beloved empire!"
A cacophony of boos echoes throughout the stadium.
"For their transgressions they have been sentenced to Entertain Until Deceased!"
The boos transform to cheers. The platform stops as it gets level with the sand-covered floor of the large arena, letting you catch a glimpse of some blood spatter and most of an arm that decorate the ground - an indication of what you're in store for if you somehow weren't aware already.
"And our esteemed guests of honor, making their first appearance of the afternoon...The Wolfpack!"
The crowds cheers elevate to preposterous levels. The air a hairs breadth from your face warps and darkens for a brief moment, long enough for you to see a grinning (otherwise featureless) copper mask materialize in front of you, before appearing to disintegrate and blow away almost like a mirage. Two others also appear and disappear in a similar manner. This is when the howls begin. The trio is seemingly using some magic to move mostly invisibly, shifting through the air like sand and creating the appearance of a darkening vortex around the group of you.
Each second seems to stretch out forever as you wait for The Wolfpack to make a move. The massive crowd is beginning to scream for blood, barely audible over the increasing volume of the howls.
