Apparently, dwarves like sunlight after all...
« on: October 12, 2007, 07:56:00 am »

Ever try using the weather command in adventure mode in a fortress? I got a nice surprise with this message. "You peer through the great windows carved through the mountain top. You cannot see the sky clearly from here, but the available sunlight indicates the day."

I found it to be a nice surprise, at least.

Nice find!

I've always imagined the dwarves having specially designed vents and windows that lead upwards.  They designed in such a way that water won't pour down into the poor guys' homes, of course.  Except the nobles.  They deserve it.

"Eh, yeah.  Indoor plumbing, sir.  Take a shower when you please."

Remember in Lord of the Rings, when there's a shaft of sunlight that precisely pierces the huge room with columns, and then hits a little window on Balin's tomb and comes down in a precise beam to illuminate his sarcophagus? That's dwarven engineering for you! I wish we could make lighting effects with DF, but it would be maddening to set up something like that.

Found another one.

"A group of large roaches has been disturbed"

I like easter eggs like these.

Yeah, if you go deeper into the fortress (past the cave river, I think) you can no longer see any windows.

Once lighting goes in, it would be awesome to light your fortress with a single skylight, and mirrors reflecting the light back and forth deeper into the depths. (Like that one scene in The Mummy.) Then you could rotate the mirrors as a kind of "switch" to control the beam.

I'm not sure what I'll be able to do in the end, but it's certainly true now that you'll have to carve any windows manually, and they will at least provide sunlight directly below them (as well as whatever temperature there is outside).  It's tricky to get both the light and the temperature to even out more naturally within the cave.

How can I trigger this message?

I don't really know. I was just playing a PLAY NOW adventurer that wandered into a kobold cave when my down key got stuck. I managed to unstick it and checked the announcements because I saw some green text, and there it was.

I think Toady has referred to it as a "vermin event". Basically, if you get near a square where they're hiding, you get the message and the roaches scatter. I think I counted about six when it happened to me, but since vermin go in and out of view I can't be sure.

dun dun dun... SECRET FUN STUFF...  ;)

There's a lot more than six roaches.  I collected most of them before a snakeman bit my expert adventurer and he (very, very slowly) was beaten to death.

Counting from gamelog.txt, I picked up 29 roaches and put them in my backpack.

You can trigger them by 'running' (Read: moving in the direction of) walls at certain spots.
I'm pretty sure it happens with rats and beetles, too. I have to check my logs.

Live beetles make great throwing weapons and tasty treats.
