High Patriarch Ashcrown looked resplendent on his silk couch, lounging against a backdrop of forest flowers. He shared the palace balcony with similarly opulent guests, mostly close kin or important enough to have married into such, but the path to the railing was left clear so those below could gaze upon their prone but elevated king. All throughout the city, similar scenes were taking place, important elves lording over their extended families in celebration of the wondrous event that had just unfolded.

"You know," the High Patriarch said, echoed by chains of trained birds to spread his words throughout the city. "When my grandfather first founded this settlement some three hundred years ago, he had only a few dozen kin and a hundred more associates. Today, we are gathered to celebrate the birth of the ten thousandth elf in the city!"

A great cheer began rolling through the crowd, each supremely thrilled to have so many elves on hand.

"It hasn't always been easy. This place was nothing but a blasted wreck when my grandfather found it and declared it a perfect spot to live forever. Many died, succumbing to hunger, thirst, sunstroke, darkness bleeding from the eyes, drowning, magical backlash, that incident we don't talk about, raids, howling things in the night, being dragged off by tentacled horrors with the faces of their dead friends, construction accidents, or last being seen walking stiffly, like a puppet, to some tune only they could hear.

Nonetheless! Many more flocked to my grandfather's vision or sprouted from our existing residents, and so it was that a sapling grew to become a proud tree. Though my grandfather tragically perished trying to tame a silt kraken- excellent idea, poor execution- and my father was carried off by a mysterious beast with truly magnificent plumage, each can rest easy knowing their many descendants continue to thrive in the wondrous garden they have established. Likewise can many of those who valiantly gave their lives take pride in what their offspring have built- a thriving garden for the most refined, elegant, and beautiful race in the world!"

A great cheering began to roll through the city, and the elves doubled down on their revelries to properly celebrate their superiority.

"But this is only the beginning! Now that we have such a critical mass of elves, I foresee even greater things on the horizon. Feast well, my kin, for tomorrow dawns a new era of growth and prosperity!"

At this, a flurry of brightly colored birds were released, painting the sky with vibrant hues celebrating the glory of the elves.

Only a few were eaten by opportunistic predators.

Explorer Leader is named: Big Man Ferun.
A huge number of citizens gather into the Grugun Agora; all adult Grug who are able to and care to attend. The day's agenda is unspoken, but obvious: to pick a leader for the Tribeship, to organize the hordes of Gruggi for labor and for war.
Those who wish to try their luck plead their cases to the crowd, but in the end one gets louder shouts than the others and is declared the Big Man. Ferun is a proven survivalist and practical living legend among Gruggi, and deemed the best choice for taming the savage wilds surrounding Grugunnium.

Work 16 (River Hills). (Food now 2, Wool now 1.) (1 Labor used.)
The foothills were once a region uninhabited by Gruggi, who preferred the jungle and wild foods. But agriculture and the improvement project has made these hills greatly more attractive, and soon a village pops up, farming and loosely herding the sheep. Bundles of wool are rolled over the fields into Grugunnium, often in exchange for foodstuffs juicier than mere bread. The village here is named 'Linda', for some reason.

The fields around the winding river are productive, but unpopular, as farming is tedious and unfun. Gruggi take to drawing straws each month to determine who must work the fields and who has the leisure of gathering in the forests. There is much grumbling, but the extra bread doesn't go unwanted. Workers in the river-fields tend to camp out just west of Grugunnium, so as to retain access to the city and its services.

These are the areas most loved by Gruggi, and make for pleasurable work shifts. Tasty berries and juicy bugs abound. Gruggi will often rip up small trees out of the ground to drag back to the city, but mainly they focus on relaxing.

Irrigate 16 (River Hills). (7 labor used.)
Having recently discovered this "Agriculture" thing, many Gruggi work enthusiastically to improve their yield, using their big muscles to excavate trenches and water gardens. They start up in the foothills where the river first bursts from the mountain rocks, mainly because the sheep there are cute and make the hard labor more bearable.

There is no Grug god. They can't remember ever worshipping. But they do know that a lack of favor with up high won't do when they're founding a city, so a makeshift shrine constructed of murdered trees is erected near the middle of the city. Half-remembered rituals and praise for foreign gods are preformed here, in hopes of finding, or perhaps making, a patron of good fortune.

Relatively few Gruggi stay in the city, winding wool into textiles in a labor intensive process. Not helped by thick fingers and a lack of patience! The resulting garments are highly sought after for protection from the elements when working the fields.

No Bonus Labor increase.
A few long-bearded philosophers speculate as to Gruggus's population. By counting the original founding families and doing some questionable 'math', they conclude that the number is exactly ten tens of tens of tens. This is, of course, absurd.

Hard works takes a lot of food. What little food is left over is saved for a feast when the Gruggi assemble for a vote. Voting is also hard work, after all.

A few fashions show up among the more well-to-do Gruggi, who are able to obtain good foods to trade. Mainly they seem interested in looking more like cute sheep. Still, the people are content.

A migratory family of Gruggi arrive in Gruggus lands and decide to settle down. There is much debate in the Agora as to grant these newcomers citizenship, residence, or even attempt to enslave them. In the end the settlement is unclear. But the migrants aren't going anywhere.

Conscious of the fact that he was elected to tame the wilds, Ferum sets out hand-picking a legion of fine lads and lasses fit to brave the wilds. He doesn't push too hard to obtain weapons, perhaps in the assumption that Grugan fists are enough to defeat most things anyways.

The Stonulus, had they known the Calamity was coming, would have said their mountain sanctuaries were ready.  There was no way that even the worst magical disaster could carve the living rock away like so much truffle?  Even if the other civilizations collapse, the wise Stonulus would be safe with their deep reserves of mushroom farms, right?

They were nowhere near ready.

The survivors spread out in search of safety and security.  Many in desperate need turned to settlements of other races, many of whom were turned away or slaughtered, treated like they were part of the now nearly-feral other species of troll.  Some tried to carve new ways of life in other lands; but even those who survived did not thrive.  No one was thriving.

With the passage of time, however, the worst effects abated.  Word began to spread that a new mountain sanctuary was under construction.  A new capital; a new home.  Solid as its namesake.  Granite.

Immigrants arrived.  Rudimentary mushroom farms were laid.  Plans were made.

It was almost time to rebuild a truly civilized world.  Were the others ready?

Doppelganger language is a form of sign language. One that somebody who can not transform can not easily grasp, given their limited ability to make shapes with their hands. As such the Leader's name is an image rather than a spoken word, an image of a spear pointing towards the sun. We'll call him Sunspear for those without transforming powers reading this.

Much of Hinterland's population is spread out along its territory, living in family units along the river, the lake, or deep within the forest. Food is plentiful here, the river gives us a bounty of fish, meat attracted to its life giving water, and plantlife enjoys growing in and around it. But if the population grows, how can we continue to sustain our people with a hunter/gatherer lifestyle? Sunspear's faction decides the answer lies in more territory. If we can have more fertile land, we can have more Doppelgangers. To that effect he is gathering a group of hunters and fishermen to explore the surrounding territory with their spears in the hopes of finding somewhere to expand into. A second faction, which we will call the Lodge, is filled with those who prefer to find a solution that allows them to remain in their ancestral homeland. They have constructed the Lodge giving them their name, a Hall of Learning where they may develop Hinterland's technology in hope for a brighter future. Current murmurings suggest they will find a way to control the river to create more plantlife - but if the Exploration goes well they may be turned a different direction.

"Rejoice! Rejoice I say! As the time of the long eclipse is over! The most learned among us now agree, the worst of the cataclysm has waned and the jungle has calmed. The great blessings of the Glorious Sun shines down upon us once again! The Dawning of a new era is upon us, and the great lands of Helianthia will Bloom once again!"-Start of the first public speech given by the newly instated High Radiance Ray Sunflower. Year 1 Day 1 Of the Reblooming Era.

With waning of the cataclysm and the coming to power of new leadership among the sunflower caste, Solaris city sees a revitalization of activity. All along the Hyacinth river a profusion of flowery people can be seen. Sturdy Cattails foraging along the banks and tending to small water hungry farms, as at times the river seems to turn yellow from the splashing bladderwort fisherflowers. Deeper in the woods Vibrant Orange monkey-flowers gather the natural spoils of the forest, joined at times by dour stranglervines sent out to bring wood back to the city for the rush of new construction projects that are taking place. To the north east, on the other side of the City and Blooming Mountain, the hills are dotted with bright spots of colors as the local plants and animals are gathered the industrious flowerfolk. A strange but hearty "animal cotton" is one of the most popular products found among the hills, and much of it is transported to the city, where it's eventually woven in clothing for the population by the bemused flax and cotton flower weavers and clothiers.

Within the city itself for the first time in many years the decay of the cataclysm is halted and new constructions spring up, wood is spent faster then it can be brought in, as great crowds of lower caste flowers, overseen by highcaste architects and priests, put together the new buildings required by the vision of the Flowering Nobility. The most important construction of course is the reconstruction of the great shrine to the sun, as new wood is brought in from the forest to shore up and rebuild the dilapidated building. Considered the most important project that the flowers are undertaking, it's construction is of prime importance to the new leader of the flowers as Ray splits his time between the administrative needs of the city and overseeing this most auspicious of projects. Another building of prime importance is the new center for scholars. The most learned of the noble high caste flowers are to gather in this new hall of learning, pooling their knowledge and passing on what they've learned to the younger generations.

"Behold, the new era of prosperity" lays scrawled above a chalk image of a visibly destitute people, wearing cloaks that would have been out of fashion and unwearable two years ago. The people surround a shrine. The shrine is wearing an even older hat. The people are praying to it. -- primitive graffiti from growing discontentment over the lack of new silk clothes, this particular example out of many was found on the side of High Patriarch Ashcrown's second house. It is unclear whether the people are praying to the shrine, or to the tacky hat.

Despite being faced with the dramatic threat of mild disappointment on an unprecedented scale, the year goes well.

Accounting Error: The city's Mushoom Pit counts as a city building and not an improvement. Working it does not give +1 stone from the tile.

Sagey the unnamed sage sees no readily apparent way to improve the mushroom farms. That would require something like an enchanted fungus that can eat rocks and grow mushrooms at the same rate as the standard variety. The troll, who has only known a life of bare survival in an age of apocalypse, gives a gravely baritone chuckle at the thought of such a thing ever being possible again.

The flowers celebration of the grand reopening of the solar shrine was an explosion of color as all castes were invited to a grand feast. In addition to plentiful food, the weavers and clothiers also presented their newest products at the celebration, and many flowers went home clothed in their new much higher quality clothing. In the days later the ruling castes would decide to award the clothiers hard work by making a series of workshops for them to work from in the future, so that the city may be fully supplied with clothing from then on.

With the grand feast over the flowers thoughts turned towards the future, not only was the population of Solaris city on the upswing for the first time in living memory, thus requiring more food to feed the population, but their defenses, worn down by time and cataclysm, were woefully under prepared. Old stories told of Helian weapons that could throw spears at great distance with deadly power, a solution to both problems facing the city by providing a weapon for defense and a new way for hunters to catch prey in the surrounding jungles. A collaboration between the smartest Helians and some of the hunters of the woods was put together to recreate these old weapons.

A second unit begins training to explore the North of the valley, without the oversight of particularly adept leadership. The Lodge faction was won over by the discovery of more fertile land. Under the logic that claiming the wider world would bring far more spoils then attempting to improve the little we have, the Doppelganger's elders have begun brainstorming ways that explore our surroundings more efficiently.

Sageittarius strode along the city streets.  It was in the air- the time was coming.  He could feel it in his old bones.  Indeed, change was coming.  The dark ages were coming to a close.  Lost knowledge would be regained; he could feel it.  Word had gotten out of the construction of a new Hall of Learning; an unthinkable luxury even a decade ago.  Soon a new generation of students would be looking to improve the world, and not just survive in it.  He smiled at the thought, and walked with great purpose.  He'd be needed.

Separately, a shrine was under construction.  People had wanted to bring glory to the old gods, and this would give them a small comfort in a broken world.
