Ask Death what's bothering him.  Also, see if there's a poker deck anywhere.  If there is, challenge Death to a game of strip poker.

Go rest by the tree and heal, leaving a slime coin as payment.

(From my deduction the (C) seems to denote (Crafted).)

I befriend the Flame Slime and teach it to sit in the cooking pit so it can help us cook and improve the inn.

Go to the shop, inquire the Shop Slime about armor and shields, see if there is a decently sized wooden shield to purchase.
