Dwarves climb tree for no reason at all
« on: March 16, 2023, 01:22:58 pm »

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

it seems that some dwarves climb trees without reason

there is no gathering zone, I never created stepladders, and I saw some dwarves descending in the river near the waterfall to collect some fish remains (also without reason since as per standing orders, outdoor refuse should be ignored)

after some digging (sic.) I found this bug on the tracker, reported on the wiki at the "climber" article
https://dwarffortress.mantishub.io/view.php?id=9252
Yes it says "solved" but it seems not completely...

the only workaround I can try is to build some temporary staircase near the tree but I'll have to be on the lookout in order to save those fake birds with beards

putnam help :(

Sounds like they were scared up the tree by an animal or invader.

There isn't a notification when the dwarf wasn't doing a job and they are startled by wildlife. They just start running around and sometimes end up in a tree.

When a dwarf is stuck in a tree, usually they will try to climb out when they have an urgent need (usually hunger or thirst). So they might stay there for a while. Animals stuck in a tree are more of a problem since they can starve.

People got their risk assessment neurons rotten and replaced with game theory. Folks walk around like fat turkeys taunting the world to slaughter them.

depending on the embark area and your civ's traits, dwarves will randomly climb trees just to hang out.

it's been a feature for awhile now.

of course, they don't know how to get down like a cat so *shrug.

I think I've also had the problem from dwarves collecting fruit out of trees using a stepladder, than another dwarf coming and taking the stepladder while they're up in the tree leaving them stuck there.

Try examining the personality of the dwarf in the tree.

They're playing "Floor is !!!lava!!!"
I'd fix it by cutting down the offending tree. IIRC dwarves don't (usually) get serious injuries if you cut a tree under them.

Do NOT cut down the tree (unless you absolutely have to). If you do this, the dwarves in the tree will fall down. And yes, if they just land on the ground, they're usually (but not always) fine with minor injuries if any. But there's a chance (and I had the misfortune of this happening) that a dwarf in the tree will fall down on top of your woodcutter. In which case, the game interprets that as your woodcutter attacking the falling dwarf. Which at least in my case triggered a mini-loyalty-cascade and brawl between those two dwarves and their friends that ended up with eight dwarves and several cats dead before everyone involved calmed down.

Instead, build a constructed staircase up to the level the dwarf in the tree is on and next to the branch they're standing on if you can. They will use the staircase to climb down, and afterward you can deconstruct the staircase (or leave it there, if you wish - might be good for picking fruit if you like, heh. Can't be stolen out from under the dwarf like a stepladder can).

How is that more fun than dumping a minecart full of magma at the base of a tree in a heavily forested area and setting the entire map on fire?

For me, FPS death (e.g. from map-wide fire, lol) is not especially fun in most cases. But I suppose it would depend on the status of the particular fortress in question (such as whether magma is available yet, etc).  :)

For best results, drop the magma on top of the tree.
