An interesting construction
« on: July 20, 2007, 04:43:00 am »

Cookie if you can work out what topological construction this is.

code:
  .....
..   ..        Floor #5
. ... .
. ... .
..   ..
 .....

 .....
..   ..        Floor #4
.. . ..
.. . ..
..   ..
 .....

 .....
..             Floor #3
.. ......
.. ......
..
 .....

 ....          Floor #2
...... ..
...... ..
 ....

  ..           Floor #1
 .... ...
 .... ...
  ..

               Floor #0
  ......
  ......

So totally building one once we have another direction of freedom!

Looks kind of like an upside down gun turret

Reminds me of a downed UFO in one of the X-Coms.

Could be wrong, but it somehow reminds me of a Klein bottle. We'd need more than just a z-axis to really build those, though.

OK. I built a 3D model of this thing and I still don't know what it is. My only guess is... some kind of inhaler? But if that was the case, having a giant stone inhaler would be kind of counter productive. Unless, of course it is a Stone Giant giant stone inhaler, you know, for Stone Giants. So apperently, your fortress is being attacked by a horde of asthmatic Stone Giants, and you want to give them some kind of peace offering, to convince them to leave you alone, presumably. That sounds perfect. Although, I'm still waiting to get a chance to build a giant stone throne. (With plumbing) for my favorite Nobles.

It's a pipe. I can't believe I didn't see that earlier.

Extremely large bong.  Just needs some floodgates and a magma igniting system.  If done right you will have very happy dwarves in the fortress.

Of course you will likely have to trade a wholes years worth of stone crafts to the elves to get something making a pleasant smoke.

After 5 years of digging....planning....over a dozen floods resulting in the deaths of 7 close dwarves...The magma eruption killing dozens...its finally complete...The Fortress BONG.

: :Drools:: I love that game. The anxious exploring of each room... will there be an alien... will there be an alien... ::door slides open::

We'll have to petition Toady for different types of smoke, from the relaxing whisps from a bong, to seedy hallucinogenic pink fumes from rare incense... and what about laughing gas, paralysis, nerve gas?

Cookie for Rhodan! This is a 3-dimensional representation of the 4-dimensional equivalent of a Möbius strip: the Klein bottle. It has a Euler characteristic of zero, same as a torus -- except it's "non-orientable". That is, if you were to walk around it in a big loop in a certain way, holding out your right hand, eventually you would come out holding out your left hand. This isn't really a faithful representation, because you need four dimensions to do it properly -- this model intersects itself and so it has a 'hole' in it. Note that if you pour water in the top, it ought to fill up from the middle. Might be a good test for the new water pressure algorithms  :)

What is the purpose of a Klein Bottle?  It seems like one of those abstract mathematical things that don't do much but confuse none-math oriented folks, like me.  Weird stuff.

Dreamer: Precisely. It's one of those "ain't it nifty" tricks you can do with 4-dimensional geometry.
