How quickly did it take for Afghanistan to fall after Biden withdrew the troops? Perhaps these rapid collapses are typical for middle eastern regimes that are propped up entirely by foreign governments?

South Vietnam wasn't a Middle Eastern regime. When you are weak and have no real popular support and your strong ally is unwilling or unable to keep protecting you - you'll collapse fast.

Seems like things are getting exciting in the middle east again.

Yes, but please let's NOT discuss it here unless it is in relation to the Ukrainian war. Especially let's not discuss the actions of the I country.

Back on topic. I am very dissapointed that Russians will be allowed to safely evacuate from Syria and maybe even will keep their naval base. I didn't expect that the fall of Assad will be bad news for Ukraine* but... it actually is. All it achieves is freeing Russian resources. Also, I have a strong feeling that one Russian ally just got replaced by another. Islamist are nearly always friendly to Russia, minus some fringe marginal groups.

With all the shortages Russia had since they invaded Ukraine, anything useful in Syria would already have been pulled back to Russia.

The Syrian rebels had limited air-defenses so Russia used older aircraft to bomb them (there are reports of Mig-23's being captured by the rebels). And the munitions used by those aircraft would have been bought by the Syrian government from someone other than Russia.

Russia Nears Deal With New Syria Leaders to Keep Military Bases (Bloomberg)

I am not even too surprised at this point. Islamists always get along with Russia in the end.

I mean, they are not independent islamists. They are sponsored by Erdogan. Who has unresolved sexual tension with Putin. So not surprising at all, no.

If you look at a map of Syria very little has changed. By and large this has been replacing Assad, who was completely burned out as a stooge, with a new guy who for the time being is less unpopular, but doesn't really seem to be much better. Syrian Civil War is far from done.

https://www.understandingwar.org/backgrounder/iran-update-december-12-2024

This report says:

These incidents and the traction they gain in the information space create opportunities for extreme and sectarian groups to incite further religious-based violence and destabilize the government formation process in Syria. These incidents remain isolated and relatively independent of each other at this time.

It also says:

The Turkish-backed Syrian National Army (SNA) confirmed on December 12 that it reached a ceasefire agreement with the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in Manbij, northern Syria.[16] The four-day ceasefire will last from December 12 to 16 in order to allow humanitarian aid to enter and unspecified security agreements. Under the agreement, the SNA will transfer control of the Sultan Suleiman Tomb and its surrounding hills to the SDF. In exchange, the SDF and SDF families will also withdraw from Manbij and the surrounding countryside. The ceasefire agreement also established the Tishreen Dam as a demilitarized zone to permit the electrical plant to continue its regular functions. SDF Commander Mazloum Abdi confirmed on December 11 that his forces withdrew from Manbij after reaching a settlement with the SNA.[17] The SDF disputed territorial control over Manbij after the SNA seized control on December 8.[18]

This also was in the report:

The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) is factionalizing under internal and external pressure. Local footage posted on December 12 showed the SDF attempt to suppress demonstrators in Raqqa who demanded that the city be brought under the HTS-led transitional government.[11] Citizens have longstanding grievances against the SDF in Raqqa, which include limited reconstruction in Arab areas, repeated SDF abuses of the local populations, and a lack of representative Arab leadership.[12] The head of the al Kasra Military Council--a member of the SDF-- defected from the SDF, citing SDF “violations” against civilians in Deir ez Zor and Raqqa.[13] Arab contingents of the SDF have rapidly begun to defect in recent days.[14] A Syrian journalist reported that approximately 220 members of the Deir ez Zor Military Council have defected from the SDF over the past 48 hours.[15]

This is after in previous reports within the past year or so of infighting in this area, especially in Deir ez Zor if I remember the reports correctly but I might be wrong. That area near there was also said, if I am remembering correctly which I might not be, to be one of those ISIS infiltration or support areas they seize and tax and goodness knows what else for a while before someone chases them off. I looked for a link to a recent report, but now I don't see the series of reports I read it in... I thought I had read one less than two weeks ago. It wasn't a daily report, more monthly or quarterly or some such.

Watching Russian convoys moving unharmed in Syria hurts me. I can only imagine how it hurts Syrians. It is what betrayal by the leaders looks like.

Also, all those will soon be in Ukraine. Or Georgria. Or somewhere else

I'd be rather surprised if the local Syrians care - they're more likely keen to end the war and rebuild a normal life, rather than start shit with Russia.

A Russian oil tanker broke into two pieces and sank. One crew member died. A LOT of fuel oil has leaked into the ocean, between the Russian mainland and Crimea.

Yet another element of ecocide... Ecological damage to Ukraine is already immense.

Also, the Black Sea is grateful for being called an ocean. (Can we somehow replace all of Russia with water? God? Aliens? Anybody? I'd love living near an ocean)
