A character of mine was killed by one, he pierced its heart with his first blow, it rips him apart, eats a drunk, before everyone else arrives. two axemen, a lasher, a pikeman, they swarm it, it proceeds to nearly kill the lasher, ripping and tearing chunks out of her, before my awesome axeman who killed a giant and a minotaur on his own, manages to pierce its heart again, killing it.

They are really, really dangerous. I've lost several adventurers to them. And they behave so much like real spiders. Web you, paralyze you, and then kill you. Hmm, they don't slurp your guts out, though. Which is probably a good thing.

I watched a giant cave spider attack my new fort once, we had 40-50 dwarves when it attacked, 20-30 when my sherrif finally lodged his axe into it...Amazing creatures..

I didn't realize they felt no pain. No pain + lots of limbs = very dangerous

Someone should mod them into a playable race, Giant Cave Spider Fortress would be very cool.

I once made a wraithspider it was so much meaner even though it was smaller and it could open doors and suck your blood too.
I stuck it in the new creatures section of the wiki under cave creatures even though the worlds nastiest spider probably deserved a space of it's own. I never actually got around to trying it out but take a look for yourself.

Shouldn't it have 8 eyes, or does the code not allow for that?

I modded a giant tarantuala once too... very bad result. too much limbs and i didn't understand the way spawning is set up so i copied a groundhog.

8 claws
8 lower legs
8 knees(i didn't knew about the join system then so...)
8 upper legs
8 shoulders
1 lower body
1 thorax
1 upper body
1 head

If something has 40 limbs you can attack without causing any harm to it then...

In my forts I keep a section near the magma for the metalsmiths/glassmakers. Statue garden, large nice rooms, well, food stashed, etc. Well, they were all off at work, so the area was empty. Then I see 'a statue has been toppled' over and over. I see something is kicking statues around in there. Send up my greatest champion (an actual champion), with full leather and bronze chain armor. He is immediately 2shotted by the giant spider he discovers.

Immediately call the rest of the army, and its taken down by a legendary marksdwarf, after webbing half a dozen dwarves to the walls.

Those things are awesome, and apparently tameable if you have a dungeonmaster.
