SOLVED (needed a hospital): wood cutter won't cut wood
« on: February 19, 2023, 04:53:51 pm »

Solon Aknunalath is a wood cutter that no longer cuts wood.  I suspect it's from an injury from cutting wood, or perhaps because she's traumatized?  Maybe it's lack of focus?  I've toggled the wood cutting labor for her and made new tree cutting designations to no avail.

She cut down two trees then suffered injury after the third.  Hazel wood logs descended from on high and struck her "in the right lower arm and the injured part is crushed!"  I understand that wood cutting is an inherently dangerous activity from logs falling not from the tree actively being cut, but from logs from other trees or items lodged in the tree being cut.

Her wound screen shows right lower arm in red.

Her status includes these cheery updates:
She was afraid reliving experiencing trauma.
She was afraid after experiencing trauma.
She was annoyed after suffering a minor injury.
Her right lower arm is mangled beyond recognition.

Because the arm is mangled, I'm gathering she can only use one hand, but the wiki indicates she should be able to use the axe one handed because the minimum size for one handed use is 47500.  She is 58,920 cm3 so should be able to single handedly wield the copper battle axe (which I've confirmed is in her inventory).

She was also thirsty, but another dwarf helpfully brought her water.  Her status includes, "I received water.  I am very satisfied."  She has several statuses indicating she is unfocused from having unmet needs (kept from alcohol, lack of trouble-making, unable to practice a craft, unable to wander, unable to pray to Tarem).

Dwarf Therapist shows her stress level as Fine at 698 (the level is descending).

If shes unfocused from not wandering (I'm not sure, but I think she hasn't moved from where she was injured), are her injuries so severe that she can't move, even though it doesn't seem to show her legs as injured?

Is she so traumatized that she's in shock and won't move?

I don't have anything medical running yet.  Does she need doctor attention or will she heal on her own?

Running version 0.47.05.

Thank you!

I'd guess she's "resting" (i.e. waiting for medical attention), but because there's no hospital she isn't being brought there and attended to. The fact that dwarves are bringing water to her is suggestive of this, as that's usual for dwarves in the hospital. Try setting up a temporary hospital zone over her bedroom or something.

Most injuries should heal over time, even without medical attention, but the hospital makes it go much faster (& reduces infection risk, with soap and clean water).

I've never heard of trauma or lack of focus causing dwarves to stop doing work.

Get that dorf a hospital bed. And you need a chief medical dorf! Even if they have no skillz. If you put the injured in a hospital bed and let someone examine them, the mangled arm will be washed, sewn up, and the dorf might even start working again before being fully healed.

My third or fourth bed in my fort is usually part of a dinky hospital (rarely more than 2x3 in the corner of the one room in the protofort) so that simple medical attention can be dealt with fast, before injuries get infected and cause more strife. It should be installed directly after the dorfs get their first sleep, when the beds are built and have been slept in, but not yet assigned to a dorf.

A hospital is just what the poor girl needed!

The diagnosis status includes Cannot Stand and Unconscious, so the mystery of why she wouldn't chop more trees is somewhat less murky now.

This wasn't obvious because I didn't see the unconscious status icon on her, there was only the injury to her lower arm, and the last two lines of the combat log reads "The peasant stands up" and "The peasant is no longer stunned."

Thank you for the guidance!
