What is causing dwarves to spill drinks?
« on: February 11, 2023, 12:23:04 pm »

Every once in a while, I get an alert that "a dwarf cancels drink, job item lost or destroyed". Then there's a pool of drink on the floor where he did that:

Then it seems that these pools somehow get teleported to the surface and multiply around the fortress.

A pool of liquid, when walked through, can attach to a dorfs feet, and then he can tramp that liquid everywhere. Installing a simple dorfwash should get rid of the problem of "teleporting" liquid to the surface, you need to get the wine off their feet.

Why they are spilling it is less obvious. Vermin encounters? Fights? I don't think dorfs sneeze. Check their cups/mugs/goblets are not broken, I guess.

I haven't noticed that before.  How often is it happening in your fort?

Not often enough to be worth asking about until now, but often enough to say enough is enough at some point. This has happened across multiple forts, and may have been a thing in previous versions.

I'm just guessing here, but it wouldn't surprise me if there's some inebriation factor involved.

as far as I know, dwarves spill their drinks, usually in taverns, when the barrel/pot where the booze is stored becomes unavailable for some reason (usually someone else wants to move or use that barrel).

usually a cat will walk through the booze puddle at some point as well, tracking the booze into all sorts of other places.

Isn't walking spreading contaminants an option that's off by default in fort mode, [WALKING_SPREADS_SPATTER_DWF:NO]?

I'm not sure if it applies to drinks, but it's always been set to "no".

If your kitchen is too close to your booze supply, perhaps the chef-dorfs are going and grabbing a barrel of booze to make a roast just when someone else picked that same barrel for a drink.

I noticed that sometimes my dwarves "recover wounded" that are not wounded, like with bees. Then they get happy thoughts about bringing them to bed.

Maybe a dwarf passes out from drinking after spilling a drink, and gets recovered by some helpful recoverer.

I have confirmed that this is indeed happening at the same time, as in the dwarf that spills the drink is also being recovered. I'm not sure which happens first.

My guess is that a dwarf drops the mug when he is passing out and the contents spill to the floor. When you spot the spill, the mug is probably long gone, hauled to a chest or used by someone else.

The incriminating mugs are definitely there.

This is actually not a bad thing. It gives good thoughts, and satisfies the need to help someone.
