Q: How can I build up+downstairs with blocks from a tunnel into "the unknown" above?

Currently I try to "construct" "stairs" (b-n-t) starting at the empty tunnel. When selecting the "endpoint" on any level above, an errormessage shows up, saying: "Hidden, cannot build at this location".
... any hints how to do that?

That's the neat thing, you don't.

Up/down stairs are a complete mess at the moment especially the constructed ones. You can't build up/down stairs below the unknown, and even if you dig out up/down stairs a dwarf won't dig out an up/down stairs designation above it unless that designation existed at the time the up/down stairs was completed. So you can order a column of up/down stairs to be dug up and it works fine as long as there is no cancellation from wet stone or something. If there are cancellations you basically have to dig from the top down.
